The Cubs complete a three game sweep of the Pirates

The Cubs completed a three-game sweep on Sunday. For the first time, they didn’t follow the formula that has driven them to success. They didn’t jump out to an early lead, though they did get a strong outing from their starting pitcher. In fact, the Cubs never had the lead in this game until the final play of the game when they walked off victorious after nine innings of regular baseball and two innings of modified baseball.

I don’t suppose modified baseball is terrible baseball, in the same way that laser bowling isn’t terrible bowling. Laser bowling is fun, particularly if you aren’t a regular bowler, you go with a group of friends to participate in it and particularly if you are drinking while you do it. Sure, it resembles regular bowling, but it is pretty much a different product. That’s how I felt with the about the first foray into modified baseball.

Certainly, the very first experience with Kyle Schwarber’s terrific play to start the top of the 10th was fun. Kyle fielded the ball on the run after Josh Bell grounded a single through the infield. Kyle then fired a near perfect laser beam throw to Willson Contreras for the out at the plate. That was good theater in a bubble. It was a good thing that the bonus runner for the Pirates was a catcher.

Ultimately, the Cubs won. I think if I weren’t someone who regularly watched baseball, I might find modified baseball interesting. It’s designed to create scoring and I can see the interest in that. As a long time observer of baseball, it’s an abomination. I don’t ever want to see if back at the MLB level. I hope no one walks away thinking that this should be some kind of regular thing to interject excitement into the game.

The rant and review of modified baseball aside, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say that the Cubs bullpen pitched five scoreless innings of baseball. This is a big step forward. Amazingly, despite how bad the pen has been, they’ve yet to cough up a lead in a game. Hopefully, the Cubs start to patch things together and the bullpen doesn’t cost them what has been a fantastic start to the season for the team.

Superhero: Dan Winkler (.233). Winkler inherited runners on first and second and two outs in the eighth inning. He struck the batter out and then pitched a scoreless ninth.

Hero: Jon Lester (.228). Another day, another solid Cubs start. Jon threw six innings allowing four hits, one walk and one run. He struck out four.

Sidekick: Ian Happ (.199). Happ had two walks three plate appearances, including one leading off the second inning (with a runner on second).

THREE GOATS:

Billy Goat: Albert Almora Jr. (-.325). Few things get under my skin the way not putting the ball in play with the winning run on third with less than two outs in a walk off situation. That’s what happened for Almora with runners on second and third with one out in the tenth. Striking out there is totally inexcusable. That capped a day in which he was hitless in four at bats.

Goat: Nico Hoerner (-.226). One of the toughest days at the plate for the rookie, also hitless in four plate appearances. He’s been very good so far, but he struck out with runners on first and third and no outs in the tenth.

Kid: David Bote (-.201). Bote had one walk in five plate appearances. He made the last out in the tenth. WPA, of course, gives no credit for him scoring the winning run in the 11th.

WPA Play of the Game: Geoff Hartlieb recorded the crucial strikeout of Albert Almora Jr. with one out and runners on second and third in the tenth. (.209)

*Cubs Play of the Game: In the bottom of the 11th inning, Anthony Rizzo was first up with David Bote being placed at second. Rizzo skied a long fly to right. Both was easily able to advance to third. (.188)

A reminder that the three Heroes and three Goats of the game are strictly by WPA scores. No subjective judgment is taken into consideration.

Up Next: The Cubs start a four-game home and home series with the Kansas City Royals. The first two are at Wrigley Field before the series moves to Kansas City. Danny Duffy starts for the Royals and Alec Mills for the Cubs. The Royals have started the season 3-7 and are already 4½ games out of first place in the AL Central. The Vegas Odds are decently set in the Cubs favor. With a second consecutive series against a cellar dweller, the Cubs have a real chance to take a commanding lead as the season approaches the quarter pole.

The Cubs won their first game played under the new extra-inning rules.

My first impression of the first runner-on-second game in Cubs history is that I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would.

The seemingly obvious “bunt the runner along and hope for a sacrifice fly” strategy isn’t what happened in any of the four half innings. Instead, we got a crunching collision play at the plate, the Cubs failing to score when they had two runners in scoring position and one out, and finally the Cubs eking out a 2-1 win over the Pirates with the “ghost runner” (David Bote) advancing on a fly ball and scoring on a single by Javier Baez.

My preference would still be for real baseball. But on an afternoon with a 64-minute rain delay (one of the few times I’d say I’m glad I wasn’t at the ballpark), this wasn’t the worst way to end the game.

The second batter of the game, Kevin Newman, homered off Jon Lester to give the Pirates what turned out to be their only lead of the series. After that, though, Jon settled down and threw six solid innings. He allowed just three more hits and a walk and struck out four and continued the Cubs starting pitcher dominance that we’ve seen through the first nine games of 2020.

The Cubs tied the game in the fifth. Willson Contreras led off with a double, and Kyle Schwarber brought him in with another one [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Close play at the plate, too — if not for Willson’s good slide both on his double and at the plate, we might be talking about a Cubs defeat this evening.

Neither team had much of a chance to score through regulation. The rain delay happened just before the Cubs half of the ninth inning, With two out in the bottom of the ninth, Schwarber walked but was stranded when Steven Souza Jr. popped up.

So, on we went to the first Ghost Runner in Wrigley Field history. It was Jacob Stallings, the Pirates catcher. Josh Bell, the next hitter, singled to left and Schwarber made a fantastic play — and so did Contreras [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

The Pirates challenged the play, claiming that Contreras was blocking the plate and out of position, but as you can see in the video, Contreras was well within his area and had to go there to get the ball. He wasn’t set up there “blocking” the plate. In fact, it could be argued that Stallings was out of the runner’s lane. Anyway, the call was upheld and Ryan Tepera got the final two outs.

In the last of the 10th, Souza became the Cubs’ first-ever Ghost Runner (remember that for trivia quizzes in years to come!) and Souza wound up on third when a ball briefly got away from Stallings. Souza was credited with a stolen base — believe it or not, the Cubs’ first steal of 2020. Ian Happ walked, so the winning run’s now on third base with nobody out, but Nico Hoerner and Albert Almora Jr. struck out and Bote popped up foul.

Ghost Runner No. 3 was Newman, but Jeremy Jeffress dispatched the three hitters in the inning on just nine pitches. Jeffress has become the Cubs’ most reliable reliever and could very well be closing games soon.

Bote, who made the last out in the 10th, was Ghost Runner No. 4 of the afternoon/evening. He advanced to third on a fly ball by Anthony Rizzo and nearly tried to score on a pitch that got away, but wisely went back to the base after Stallings picked it up quickly.

Javy then ended things on a happy note [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

It was the Cubs’ first walkoff win since July 16, 2019, when Schwarber hit a walkoff homer against the Reds.

Besides the win, the best thing about this game is that the Cubs bullpen, which has been nothing short of awful this season, threw five shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks, with three strikeouts. That reduced the bullpen ERA from 9.75 to 8.09... okay, it’s still bad, but it’s less bad than it was when Sunday’s action began.

So the Cubs begin this... season, or whatever you want to call it... 7-2. That’s obviously considerably better than last year’s horrific 2-7 start. This team seems to be taking the COVID-19 protocols seriously off the field, though on the field there’s still too much closeness in the dugout and you can certainly understand celebrating a walkoff win with your teammates, but they have to be careful about that, too. The 7-2 mark matches the Braves for the best in the National League, and the Cubs will enter Monday’s action with a 2½-game lead over the Brewers, who didn’t play all weekend due to the Cardinals COVID-19 outbreak.

As I said, I didn’t hate the Ghost Runner as much as I thought I would. Once the runner’s in place, it’s still baseball plays that have to be made to bring him in to score. I still don’t want to see it used past 2020, though, once we get back to a “normal” season, hopefully in 2021.

The Royals will begin a four-game set against the Cubs (first two at Wrigley, last two in Kansas City) Monday night. Former Royal Alec Mills will get the call for the Cubs Monday and Danny Duffy will start for KC. Game time is 7:15 p.m. CT and TV coverage is on Marquee Sports Network.

Jon Lester threw five no-hit innings against the Reds in his first start of 2020, last Monday in Cincinnati. His velocity still isn’t what it used to be, and probably never will. Like a lot of older pitchers, he has to learn craft and guile where he used to just be able to spot his fastball. At age 36, he appears to be doing this.

Last year against the Pirates, Jon made five starts and posted a 3.16 ERA and 1.636 WHIP. That’s a high WHIP, but he managed to keep most of the baserunners from scoring. Hopefully, the same will happen today.

Steven Brault started a game last Monday against the Brewers and threw two shutout innings. Per this article, both Brault and Chad Kuhl are coming off injuries from last year, so the Pirates have been piggybacking them and will likely do so again this afternoon. The two combined for 5⅔ scoreless innings in the game last Monday. Today, Brault is expected to go three innings and Kuhl likely takes the next three.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
