Cubs hold on for their fifth consecutive win

All’s well that ends well. The Cubs won their fifth straight and continue to pace the National League. It has certainly helped to play a couple of lesser teams over the last five games. The Cubs were not sharp enough over those five games to have been likely to win five straight against elite competition. Fortunately, there is no standard for that. The only opponent you can beat is the one in the other dugout on a given day. They’ve managed to do that for five straight now and in nine of 11.

Nothing is over after 11 games, not even in a short season. But, the Cubs are building a nice cushion for themselves that will help when this team inevitably has its struggles. Even in this abbreviated season, I think it is early to look too much at overall team stats. That is especially true given that some teams have played significantly less games than others due to cancellations. But, the Cubs are scoring a good number of runs. They are also getting good to great starts day in and day out. Scoring handfuls of runs most nights and getting a competitive start will give you a chance to win most games.

Last night it was Kyle Hendricks. He’s now managed the Goldilocks of three starts. One was dominant. One was subpar. One was decidedly average. On a good team, a pitcher with that breakdown might win 15 or more games. The offensive star was Jason Heyward. His two-run homer got the Cubs on the board last night. Then he was on base for the Jason Kipnis two-run homer later. Willson Contreras provided what turned out to be a huge insurance run with his late homer.

Jeremy Jeffress threw another scoreless inning in the eighth. That’s when David Ross tried to get Craig Kimbrel back on the proverbial horse. I remain torn on that decision. I tip my cap that he did so on a very short leash. I understand that a healthy, productive Kimbrel makes the Cubs a significantly better team. But, every win is precious. We’ve heard over the last couple of years that the Cubs sometimes lacked killer instinct. They’d take two out of three when maybe they could have swept. In this short season, every game matters. Is Kimbrel better for the one strikeout he did record last night? Or does he get even further into his head for getting pulled? Certainly no reliever benefits if he is always looking over his shoulder for the manager to be coming to the mound to get him. I just don’t know for sure what the right answer, the right balance is there.

But, the Cubs won. They leave Chicago having swept a five-game homestand. They head for Missouri to continue the home and home set with the Royals. Then they meet a different type of test. Heading to St. Louis to face a team that has had an active COVID-19 outbreak. This Cubs team has been very diligent in following the safety guidelines. It’s going to be even more important to do so facing a team that has players who may have been exposed. We live in strange times.

... but not before another Craig Kimbrel meltdown.

The Cubs’ 5-4 win over the Royals Tuesday evening at Wrigley Field, their fifth straight victory, had a little bit of everything — strong starting pitching again, some solid defense, a couple of home runs, and yet another bad Craig Kimbrel outing to dissect.

I’ll get to that, but let’s start at the beginning.

After a 1-2-3 first inning, Kyle Hendricks gave up three straight hits in the second, giving the Royals their first lead of the series at 1-0. After a visit from Tommy Hottovy, Hendricks retired the next three hitters without incident, and the Royals’ lead thus lasted about five minutes.

Willson Contreras led off the bottom of the second with a single, and he was followed to the plate by Jason Heyward [VIDEO].

That ball went a long, long way, almost hitting the RAV4 that’s on the back of the bleacher concourse:

Meanwhile, Hendricks had settled down into his usual good pitching pattern. He got touched up for one more run in the fifth on two singles and a sacrifice fly, but overall his outing was very good: seven innings, seven hits, two runs, no walks, three strikeouts.

Now it’s 5-2, a three-run lead, and Kimbrel entered to throw the ninth. Admit it, you cringed. But at some point, Kimbrel’s going to have to figure out things in order to pitch in games. He’s not just going to sit unused in the bullpen.

The outing was bad, once again: Single, strikeout, double, now the tying run’s at the plate and David Ross has seen enough. Kyle Ryan was summoned to clean up the mess, and a groundout and a single plated two Royals runs. Pinch-runner Nick Heath stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error, so now the tying run’s 90 feet away, but with two out.

That’s when Kris Bryant came up with this outstanding play [VIDEO].

That ball wasn’t too far from heading to left field as a game-tying hit.

Well, what else is he going to say? A good manager doesn’t throw his players under the bus publicly. Joe Maddon didn’t and David Ross isn’t going to. They just have to keep working through this, that’s all that can be done. Kimbrel threw five fastballs out of 11 pitches and touched 97 on all but one of them — so velocity isn’t the issue, it’s his apparent inability to locate and have command. This... isn’t good:

Meanwhile, Heyward says he knows one reason this Cubs team is doing so well:

Of course, a team has to be talented to win, but do not discount the value of what Heyward’s talking about here. It matters.

This is the fifth time the Cubs have won at least nine of their first eleven games, previously accomplished in 1907, 1934, 1969 and 2016. Two of those years ended in World Series victories. The 1969 season, you know about; in 1934 the Cubs led early, but finished third, eight games out of first place. The 2016 Cubs lost game number 12 to go to 9-3, so this year’s team could be in even more exclusive company if they win Wednesday night in Kansas City.

The teams have traveled overnight to K.C. to continue this four-game set. Yu Darvish gets the start for the Cubs and Kris Bubic will go for the Royals. Game time is 7:05 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.

The Cubs seek their fifth straight win.

Notes for Tuesday...

GO GRANDPA! Besides David Ross, just three others have started their Cubs managerial career with at least eight wins in their first 10 games: Albert Spalding (9-1 in 1876), Cap Anson (9-1 in 1879) and Rogers Hornsby (8-2 in 1930-31).

THE PROFESSOR: Kyle Hendricks is 7-1 with a 1.77 ERA (19 earned runs in 96⅔ innings) in his last 14 starts at Wrigley field dating to April 19 of last season, recording 13 quality starts. His 1.77 home ERA in that span leads the majors, ahead of the Mets’ Jacob deGrom (2.03) and the Astros’ Justin Verlander (2.26). More on Kyle below.

EVERYONE DIGS THE LONG BALL: Javier Baez, Ian Happ and Anthony Rizzo lead the team with three homers apiece. The Cubs and Padres (Trent Grisham, Wil Myers, Fernando Tatis Jr.) are the only N.L. teams with three players with three or more homers each.

LET’S GET HAPP-Y: Ian Happ went 1-for-3 in Monday’s game, and in his last 18 games dating to September 21 of last season he is hitting .375 (21-for-56) with five doubles, eight homers, 18 RBI, a .435 on-base percentage, an .893 slugging percentage and a 1.328 OPS.

You know the Cubs must be having a great starting pitching year when Kyle Hendricks’ ERA is the worst among the five starters.

Hendricks threw a complete-game shutout against the Brewers in his first start, but the Reds knocked him around a bit his last time out, where he was charged with six earned runs in 4⅓ innings. The last two weren’t his fault, as they scored on a home run served up by Rex Brothers.

Kyle’s only career start vs. the Royals was September 28, 2015, and as you can see by that boxscore link, most of those Royals (who won the World Series that year) are long gone. Kyle threw six shutout innings that night, a game won in extras on a Chris Denorfia walkoff homer.

With the weather again forecast to be cool with the wind blowing in, it could be a good night for pitchers.

Brady Singer was the Royals’ first-round pick (18th overall) in 2018 out of the University of Florida — six picks before the Cubs chose Nico Hoerner. Singer has just one year of pro experience, 2019, split between the Royals’ Advanced-A and Double-A affiliates, where he posted a 2.85 ERA and 1.187 WHIP in 26 starts.

They’re very high on his talent and he has made two starts for them this year covering 10 innings. He’s allowed four runs (3.60 ERA) with four walks and 10 strikeouts.

Singer has obviously never faced the Cubs or anyone on their roster. Often, that’s an advantage to the pitcher. We’ll find out soon. As noted in the Royals lineup tweet, today is Singer’s birthday, he turns 24 today.

The 2020 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week/Date) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
