Cubs win second straight behind Javy’s big night

The Cubs won a second straight game on Monday night. After a week with some struggles, it feels comforting to string together a couple of wins. With any luck, the Cubs will be able to stack a few more wins in this trip to Detroit.

The big story of the night was the offensive explosion from Javier Baez. As someone who writes about the Cubs most days during the regular season, I have a pretty good feel for patterns. One of those patterns is that right about the time I start really getting down on Javy, thinking he needs some time off or that his hyper-aggressive playing style is catching up to him, he has a breakout game. And so it was that I finally broke down and wrote about his struggles over the weekend and now he busts out. Two homers were part of a three-hit game.

Nothing fixes from one game. But, make no mistake, the vast majority of all of the players in MLB pile up their numbers against lesser competition. That is the ebb and flow of things. Every now and then you happen to be a good matchup against one of the better pitchers or they make a mistake that you took advantage of it. But, it’s nights like last night’s nine run output from the Cubs offense that balances out a whole lot of struggles against tougher competition.

Regardless of who or what the opposition is, the win counts. It’s hard to say the Cubs “needed” that. But it had been some time since they won back-to-back games, so this one felt a little bigger than some. With the win, the Cubs remained three games in front of the Cardinals as the Cubs creep up on the halfway point of their season. The Cardinals, so far, have done a really good job of surviving the onslaught of games they have clustered together after missing a full two weeks of the season.

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. With that, let’s get to the results.

The ballclub reached a milestone win, and Javy Baez broke out with a big night.

The Chicago Cubs are the only MLB franchise to remain in one city since the National League was created in 1876.

144 years after that creation, the franchise reached 11,000 total wins Monday with a 9-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Only the Giants, with 11,179 wins, have more.

This win was particularly satisfying because all the things the Cubs have struggled with over the last week or so — starting pitching, offense — got themselves back on track Monday evening. Specifically, Javier Baez had a big night after a long slump that had him go 5-for-41 (.122) over his previous 12 games entering Monday night’s contest.

The Cubs went out quietly against Casey Mize in the first inning, then the offense got itself going in the second. Willson Contreras singled and Victor Caratini was hit by a pitch. With two out, David Bote gave the Cubs the lead [VIDEO].

That was a really good night for Javy. He also singled, and in the sixth hit a deep drive to center field that was almost a third home run. Hopefully this really gets him going. He put baseballs all over the field on several different types of pitches, too:

Bases-loaded situations have been where the Cubs offense has gone to die so far this year. They’d been 0-for-2 with the bags jammed in this game previously, but this time they made it pay off, thanks to Bote [VIDEO].

Bote also had a big night, with the homer, two singles and four RBI. His 17 RBI now lead the team and . He had also been scuffling a bit. Coming into Monday’s game he was in a 3-for-22 slump. Hopefully Bote, Baez and the rest of the offense are now ready to really break out. The nine runs are two more than they scored in the entire White Sox series over the weekend.

Ryan Tepera and Colin Rea finished up with one scoreless inning each.

The Cubs improved their record vs. American League teams to 7-3 with this win, and they’ll go for two in a row against the Tigers Tuesday evening in Detroit. Tyler Chatwood will be activated from the injured list to start for the Cubs and Spencer Turnbull will go for the Tigers.
The Cubs have 33 games remaining entering tonight’s action: 13 at home and 20 on the road.
All of the teams the Cubs face on this trip have losing records at home, beginning with the Tigers, who are 4-9 in Comerica Park this year.

This is all good. Now they just have to deliver.

Also, Yu Darvish continues to be awesome:

MILESTONE TIME: The Cubs are one win away from reaching 11,000 regular season victories in franchise history. At 10,999 wins all-time, the franchise is second behind the New York/San Francisco Giants (11,179 all-time wins). BCBer JohnW53 will have more details in the comments.

MAKING THE MOST OF WHAT YOU HAVE: Sunday’s win over the White Sox was already the Cubs’ third this season in which they scored two or fewer runs in a game (also August 2 vs. the Pirates, 2-1, and August 3 vs. the Royals, 2-0). The team’s three victories with two or fewer runs are tops in the N.L.

SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE: The Cubs are 6-3 vs. American League teams so far this year and the Tigers are 6-3 vs. National League teams.

IT’S ALL ABOUT THAT BASE: Cubs hitters rank third in the N.L. and fifth in the majors with a .333 on-base percentage behind only the Mets (.356), Yankees (.344), Phillies (.342) and Rays (.334).

Alec Mills’ first two starts this year were very good, leading to him being dubbed the “Adjunct Professor,” as his style is similar to Kyle Hendricks.

A remedial class or two might be good for Mills after his last two starts, in which he got hit hard. Don’t look. Seriously. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Mills has never faced the Tigers or anyone on their roster. So maybe that’ll work to his, and the Cubs’, advantage tonight.

Casey Mize was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 draft, the same first round where the Cubs chose Nico Hoerner. He’s been a Top 20 MLB prospect each of the last two years and dominated every minor-league level where he’s pitched.

He is making his second MLB start tonight. The first was against the hot White Sox, and you can imagine how that went after seeing the Sox this past weekend. Although, Mize only allowed one home run. Maybe Cubs starters should take notes.

Like Mills, Mize has never faced tonight’s opponent or anyone on the Cubs active roster.

Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. Here is a list of providers currently carrying Marquee. It’s also on FS1 (no blackouts). FS1 is picking up the Fox Sports Detroit broadcast with announcers Matt Shepard, Jack Morris and Trevor Thompson.

The 2020 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week/Date) game threads.” It will contain every thread related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
