The Cubs win 8-2 for fourth win in five games

One of the oddities of COVID-19 baseball is playing in front of essentially empty parks. That nullifies some of the effect of home field advantage. That doesn’t remove familiarity with the oddities of the park you play in nor does it eliminate you are staying in a hotel rather than you own bed in your own home. All together, I’d still expect there to be at least some advantage to playing at home. And yet, the Cubs have played some of their best baseball on the road.

I’m not sure if that is incidental or if there is a reason for it. But the Cubs have been very effective away from Wrigley Field. They were again last night. With that win, they moved to 5-4 on the trip and that number includes bullpen meltdowns in Detroit and Cincinnati that certainly could have been wins. If they can finish off the three-game sweep of the Pirates today, they’ll have gone 6-4 on this trip and have gone a long way towards wrapping up the NL Central.

Even Kyle Hendricks, who continues to have pronounced home/road splits, was very good Wednesday night. He looked early on like maybe he’d have another off start, but then got things in gear and ended up throwing six innings of one run ball. Obviously, I’m not going to oversell it. The Pirates traded off a number pieces over the last year and aren’t a competitive team right now. But every night, somewhere in baseball, a “good” team is losing to a “bad” team somewhere. I will never, ever, take it for granted that just because you are a significantly better team that a win is a given or shouldn’t be appreciated.

Javier Baez added a long home run to start the scoring and Anthony Rizzo added a couple of hits and drove in a pair of runs. Hopefully, those two can get it in gear. If you want to dream on a deep playoff run for the Cubs, you pretty much have to be dreaming on those two and Kris Bryant being the ones driving the offense as they have for the last few years.

With that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. With that, let’s get to the results.

He’ll face JT Brubaker. The oddsmakers have this one pretty confidently as another Cubs win. Let’s hope that they can do that.
The Cubs offense got untracked, and solid pitching helped win this game.

We have all been waiting for a game like this for a long time. Sure, the Cubs blasted home runs against the Reds in winning Sunday, and they won a messy game against the Pirates Tuesday, but I have been looking for the entire offense to contribute and not just score all their runs via the long ball.

That’s what we got Wednesday in an efficient 8-2 Cubs win over the Pirates, with the addition of a solid (if unspectacular) road outing for Kyle Hendricks. Kyle has struggled away from Wrigley Field since last year and so it’s good to see him put together this kind of game on the road.

The Pirates took an early, second-inning lead on a solo home run by Colin Moran off Hendricks. That, fortunately, would be the only run The Professor allowed.

It took till the fourth inning for the Cubs offense to begin to solve Joe Musgrove, who’s been tough on Cubs hitters his entire career. But Musgrove had missed almost a month with a tricep injury, and he ran out of gas in that inning. Willson Contreras led off with a single and Anthony Rizzo doubled him to third.

Javier Baez cleared the bases [VIDEO].

Hendricks managed to complete six innings, and while he wasn’t in the strike zone as much as usual (102 pitches, 59 strikes), he allowed just six hits and two walks, striking out six. He’s averaging more than six innings per start (eight starts, a NL-leading 50 innings), and with his next outing at home, this one’s a good sign. He did throw these two nasty changeups:

The Pirates added a run in the last of the seventh on a solo homer off Ryan Tepera, but the Cubs put the game away in the eighth. With one out, David Bote walked, and an out later, Ian Happ singled.

Alford did a good job of trying to sell that as a catch, but as you can see, review clearly showed the ball was trapped. That scored Bote; Happ went to third and Contreras was placed at second base.

Duane Underwood Jr. and the just-recalled Jason Adam finished up the eighth and ninth without further ado and the Cubs had their third straight win.

I don’t want to disparage the Pirates, but it’s clear they’re not a very good team. These are the sorts of games that good teams ought to win, and despite some of their troubles the Cubs are, in fact, a good team. They’re going to have to deal with the injuries to Tyler Chatwood and Jose Quintana and cobble together a rotation for the rest of the year. That will be especially important for the five-game series against the Cardinals coming up this weekend. Looks like Adbert Alzolay will get his chance:

The Cubs lead the National League in walks with 146. That’s 4.17 per game; for a 162-game schedule that would be a pace for 676 walks, which would break the franchise record (656, set in 2016). That’s good! Now get more of those baserunners home.

HAPP-ENSTANCE: Ian Happ belted his third leadoff homer of the season then delivered a game-winning RBI single in the 11th. CUB POWER: The Cubs have hit 16 home runs in their last five games, recording at least two homers in each game. The 16 long balls are just one shy of the franchise mark in a five-game stretch, done twice: 17 homers in five games from August 9-14, 1959 and again from August 8-12, 2002. (H/T: Ed Hartig)

DON’T WALK: Kyle Hendricks enters having allowed two or fewer walks in each of his last 36 starts dating to April 7 of last season, and tonight could tie the franchise mark (since 1901) set by Bill Hands, who went 37 straight starts with two or fewer walks from September 11, 1967-April 13, 1969. More on Hendricks below.

It’s getting ridiculous for Kyle Hendricks.

Home: four starts, 2.61 ERA, 0.795 WHIP
Road: three starts, 6.61 ERA, 1.592 WHIP

Kyle’s a smart guy, Dartmouth-educated and all that. You’d think he should be able to figure this out. He has a 3.38 ERA and 1.083 WHIP in nine career starts at PNC Park, so maybe that’ll help.

Joe Musgrove is pretty much a league-average, or slightly better, starting pitcher who just loves dominating the Cubs. He has a 1.69 career ERA and 0.891 career WHIP in seven starts vs. the Cubs, his best against any team where he’s started against them more than twice.

This year, Musgrove made three starts before hitting the IL with “right tricep inflammation.” This will be his first start since August 4, and the results before that weren’t great: 6.75 ERA, 1.773 WHIP, four home runs in 14⅔ innings.

The Pirates won that game, though Hendricks had a decent outing (five innings, two runs). I’d take another one of those, if The Professor could tack another inning or two on to it.

The 2020 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week/Date) game threads.” It will contain every thread related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
