Alec Mills throws a no-hitter to lead Cubs in a rout of the Brewers.

Today’s picture at the top of the piece captures a new pinnacle in the story that is Alec Mills’ unlikely MLB career. You’ve already read or will read stories about a guy who went unrecruited for college baseball, who was never considered any kind of prospect to reach the major leagues, who has had Tommy John surgery, who was traded away by the team for whom he made his MLB debut for a minor leaguer. Absolutely, Alec’s story is about the things that he has overcome. Those are great stories. I’ve read most of them and you should too.

I’m going to take a slightly different angle. Last weekend, when the Cubs were slogging through a five game set with the Cardinals, many looked ahead and thought the Cubs were doomed. I tend to be less dire then the collective voice of Cub fandom. I’m largely an optimist at heart. But yes, even I thought that if the Cubs didn’t win their Monday game against the Cardinals and saw their lead shrink to just half a game that they were in real trouble. Fortunately, they did win that game and we didn’t have to find out if that was the getting over the hump moment for the Cardinals team.

We can’t know how baseball would have played out differently. But, the pitching match-ups against the Reds did not favor the Cubs. The best hope for victory on paper was the one that had the Reds’ best 2020 pitcher on the mound. That was a scary looking series. Trevor Bauer was great and the Cubs did lose that one, despite having their own ace on the hill. But they won the other two games in that series. One with an impressive mid-game come from behind victory.

But then came the Brewers. The Brewers have been extremely tough on the Cubs in September in recent years. Knocking the Cubs out of a division title with a blistering finish to 2018 and helping to finish off the first non-playoff season for the Cubs since 2014 in 2019. Those Brewers shut the Cubs out on Friday night. Then they shut the Cubs out for eight more innings on Saturday. Things looked as bleak as they could for 17 innings. 17 shutout innings. The Cubs offense looked inept, even while their pitching was putting up some of their strongest performances of the year.

Then the final 10 innings of the weekend occurred. In that time, we saw Jason Heyward hit a three-run homer off of Josh Hader to give the Cubs a lead. Josh Hader does not allow hits to lefthanded batters, much less three-run homers. Craig Kimbrel pitched a shaky ninth inning but recorded a very key save following the Cubs improbable ninth inning rally. Then Alec Mills did his thing on Sunday while the Cubs offense roared back, piling up 12 runs.

Three very important performances at a key time in the season. All turned in by guys who people have gotten down on. I was accused once of being a relative of Jason Heyward because of my support for him. Craig Kimbrel was to be put out to pasture as washed up. Alec Mills needed to be pulled from the rotation. I’m not throwing stones or being holier than thou. Without even looking, I’m positive that I just wrote two or three starts ago that at minimum Mills shouldn’t be allowed to see a hitter three times when he starts.

When Theo Epstein and this Cubs front office sees something in a player, they hate to give up on it. There are certainly times where they’ve stubbornly tried to get a guy on track but he just didn’t get there. But there are also times when they’ve stood by a guy and that guy rewarded their faith by overcoming their struggles and becoming/returning to the player that they could be. Loyalty. It isn’t often a trait that can be found in sports. It’s refreshing to me.

My favorite story that I read in the various tidbits on Sunday involves two of those redemption stories. David Ross reportedly asked Jason Heyward if he wanted a few innings off once the score got lopsided. He was, of course, very much aware that history might be made. He didn’t want to come out. He wanted to be there to shore up the defense while Mills chased that history. Supporting a teammate doesn’t win you a Nobel Peace Prize, a Purple Heart or even an MVP. But there have been so many stories like that in the time Jason has been here. I have no doubt that there were stories like that during his time in St. Louis and Atlanta before that. I’ve supported Jason throughout his time here because there are so many stories about what a great human being and teammate he is.

I finish today’s writing with a tip of the cap to Alec Mills. God bless you, Alec, for never giving up. For always pushing forward and ignoring the critics. No one can know what the future will hold. But no one can take away the history that was made. Alec Mills made the major leagues, became a starting pitcher, and threw a no-hitter. Could he possibly add “started a postseason game” to that resume? I’m certain he will at least make a postseason roster. What a great story.

And with that, we turn our attention to yesterday’s game as we look at what WPA had to say about Heroes and Goats. As always the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. With that, let’s get to the results.

Those are words you did not expect to read in a headline here. Congratulations, Alec!

Of all the things I might have predicted for this weekend’s Cubs/Brewers series in Milwaukee, “Alec Mills throws a no-hitter” was very, very low on the list.

But that’s exactly what he did. And this feat was accomplished almost 12 years to the day since Carlos Zambrano threw one in Miller Park (September 14, 2008) — but not against the Brewers, instead against the Astros! — and the Cubs emphatically won the series with a 12-0 thrashing of their division rivals.

Mills was dominant all afternoon. He walked three, struck out five and induced a lot of weak contact, with 10 ground ball outs and several infield popups. He threw a career-high 114 pitches (74 strikes) and recorded his first MLB complete game and shutout. That’s very similar to the style of Kyle Hendricks, “The Professor,” whose approach is similar to Mills’. We’ve called Mills the “Adjunct Professor,” but after a game like this, I think he should be promoted to “Associate Professor.”

Beyond Mills’ outstanding performance, the Cubs offense opened up in varied ways Sunday afternoon, helped along by some Brewers errors, both physical and mental.

The game went scoreless through three innings, and in fact Brewers starter Adrian Houser also no-hit the Cubs through three. After a one-out walk in the fourth, Javier Baez reached on Milwaukee’s first error, and Jason Heyward then put the Cubs on the board with this double [VIDEO].

Now runners are on second and third, and Jason Kipnis hit a ground ball to second. Error number two! [VIDEO]

There’s still only one out, with runners now on first and third. This Victor Caratini bloop single made it 3-0 [VIDEO].

David Bote was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and you know how bad the Cubs have been this year with three runners on. Ian Happ helped them come out of the bases-juiced slump [VIDEO].

The Cubs plated five runs all told in the fourth, all of them unearned due to the two errors.

Schwarber walked, again, leading off the inning. Baez doubled him to third, and one out later Kipnis hit a fly ball to center, scoring one run... oh, wait, Baez showed off his baseball smarts again! [VIDEO]

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Schwarber scored, and when Eric Sogard messed around with the ball, looking around as if to throw to second (thinking, perhaps, Baez had left early), Baez just took off for the plate. Time had not been called, so the run counted, though Brewers manager Craig Counsell got himself tossed arguing the play. You couldn’t tell behind his mask, but Counsell looked pretty upset. (It’s his own player he should be upset at, probably.)

Now it’s 7-0 — Kipnis getting two RBI on the sac fly — but the Cubs weren’t done scoring off reliever J.P. Feyereisen. He walked Victor Caratini and Bote made it 9-0 [VIDEO].

The Cubs added runs in the seventh (RBI double by Caratini) and ninth (groundout by Caratini, sac fly by Bote) to make it 12-0.

And then came the bottom of the ninth. Mills got Jacob Nottingham on a foul popup, struck out Tyrone Taylor and then up stepped Jace Peterson [VIDEO].

It’s the 16th no-hitter in Cubs history (13th since the pitching distance was set at 60 feet, six inches in 1893, 12th since 1900) and the first since Jake Arrieta’s second no-no against the Reds, April 21, 2016. I don’t think I need to remind you what else happened for the Cubs in 2016. I will have a complete rundown of all Cubs no-hitters here tomorrow morning at 8 a.m. CT. And, for good measure:

Other notes for Sunday:

LONG TIME COMING: Saturday’s win was the first for the Cubs when entering the ninth inning trailing since June 15, 2019, when Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth at Dodger Stadium.

HOME AND AWAY: The Cubs are 16-12 at home and 11-8 on the road. Only three other NL teams have winning records both at home and on the road: Dodgers (15-8 at home and 17-6 on the road), Padres (16-6 and 13-11) and Braves (15-8, 12-11).

UP THE LEADERBOARD: Craig Kimbrel picked up his second save of the season Saturday. It was the 348th of his career. He moves into 12th place in MLB history, passing former Cub Randy Myers. Next up: Troy Percival with 358.

MORE RELIEF: The Cubs bullpen has posted a 2.05 ERA (13 earned runs in 57 innings) in the team’s last 17 games dating to August 28, holding opponents to a .181 average (36-for-199) and a .541 OPS.

Alec Mills threw six shutout innings against the Reds in his last outing, September 8 at Wrigley Field. He has faced the Brewers once this year, August 14 at Wrigley Field, and actually was throwing quite well until Christian Yelich hit a three-run homer off him in the sixth. Looks like Mills just ran out of gas that night.

The bullpen should be well rested today (and there’s an off day tomorrow) in case Millsy gets in trouble early.

Adrian Houser threw five decent innings vs. the Cubs August 15 at Wrigley Field, allowing three runs. Anthony Rizzo homered off him that afternoon.

Since then his numbers have not been good: four starts, 20⅔ innings, 7.84 ERA, 1.742 WHIP. If ever there were a day the Cubs could finally have the offense break out, this looks like it.

Today’s game is on Marquee Sports Network. Here is a list of providers currently carrying Marquee. It’s also on TBS (full national broadcast, no blackouts). TBS announcers: Rich Waltz and Ron Darling.

The 2020 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week/Date) game threads.” It will contain every thread related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
