The Cubs are clicking on almost all cylinders.

The Cubs sent only one player to Peoria Wednesday evening who will be an everyday starter — Anthony Rizzo. Teams are supposed to send four “regulars” to away games, but that’s been loosely enforced in recent years.

Eric Sogard is making his case for being at least a platoon starter at second base this year. Sogard went 2-for-3 and drove in a pair and the Cubs defeated the Mariners 6-2. Sogard is hitting .360/.448/.520 (9-for-25) with a home run this spring.

The Mariners took a 1-0 lead off Zach Davies in the second inning on a solo homer by Taylor Trammell.

In the fourth, the Cubs got to work. Cameron Maybin, leading off the inning, homered [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Maybin’s been looking pretty good this spring, and he, along with Sogard, are likely additions to the 40-man roster and the Opening Day 26-man roster. (I do wish Maybin would stop trying to steal, his speed is down a couple of ticks from his prime and he’s no longer really a base stealer.)

Anyway, Nico Hoerner followed Maybin’s homer with a triple, his second in as many games, and Mariners starter Justin Dunn walked the bases loaded.

Davies struck out.

Sogard followed with a two-run single [VIDEO].

The next hitter, David Bote, reached on a throwing error, with Sogard scoring the fourth run of the inning.

Jake Marisnick made it 5-1 with a solo shot leading off the fifth [VIDEO].

Your browser does not support HTML5 video.

Spring training, small sample size, etc. but Marisnick has been very impressive so far and looks like an upgrade over Albert Almora Jr.

Davies was removed with one out in the fifth. The solo homer was the only run he allowed — the first run he’s allowed this spring — and Davies struck out eight.

Brandon Workman worked a scoreless sixth, issuing one walk.

In the seventh, Craig Kimbrel allowed a runner to reach on an error by Patrick Wisdom, but got out of the inning on two fly balls to left and a grounder to second. Kimbrel’s last three outings have been much, much better than the first three. In those outings: three innings, one hit, no runs, no walks, three strikeouts. Hopefully that continues.

The Cub subs added a run in the eighth on an RBI single by Matt Duffy and the Mariners got that run back off Trevor Megill in the bottom of the eighth.

Dillon Maples was on the list to pitch in this game, but did not appear. I’m not sure why.

Incidentally, the Australian-sounding voice on the broadcast was Ryan Rowland-Smith, who pitched for the Mariners from 2007-14 and was in the Cubs organization for a year, 2012, which he spent at Triple-A Iowa.

The Cubs will play yet another night game Thursday, this one at Sloan Park against the Dodgers. Adbert Alzolay will start for the Cubs and Dustin May gets the call for the Dodgers. Game time is 8:05 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network. The game will also be carried live on MLB Network. The game will also have a radio broadcast on 670 The Score.

For spring training games, we’ll have a first-pitch thread at five minutes to game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). For today, that will be 8:35 p.m. CT and 10 p.m. CT.

There will also be a StoryStream on the front page with all the game thread links, as well as the recap after the game is over. The pitcher photos and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.
