Cubs fall flat in series finale, lose to Dodgers 7-1

Sunday night’s game was an echo back to the games from this past April, the timeframe when it really looked like this Cubs team was just flat out overmatched and might be one of the worst teams in the league. The offense was inept. Though in fairness, Clayton Kershaw has been doing that to opponents for a long, long time. The pitching staff wasn’t awful... if you could ignore one inning.

Of course, you can’t ignore one inning. But all of it works together. Adbert Alzolay lost quite a bit of command in the second inning, loaded the bases without the benefit of a hit and then they were unceremoniously emptied with one hit, in this instance a grand slam. Then to make matters worse, Javier Baez made an error with two outs and the Dodgers launched another home run to complete a six-run inning.

Clayton Kershaw has been tough to beat for years. Clayton Kershaw handed six runs by the end of the second inning is an assassin. You just aren’t going to beat him after he gets that large of a lead, particularly at home. The rest of the game was anti-climactic as one would expect. The Cubs lost the second inning 6-0. The rest of the game was played at 1-1. The whole series was fairly evenly played, but the Dodgers had some really timely home runs and the Cubs couldn’t cash in their opportunities.

This is the thing with the Dodgers. They are a really well-put-together team. They just keep finding creative ways to add talent without having their team salaries get too far into the stratosphere. That is helped by a steady pipeline of internal talent to supplement their frequent forays into free agency. The Dodgers remain a scary team. For a variety of reasons, including the injuries that seemingly every team is going through, they haven’t yet hit their full stride. Without their full stride, they sit at 47-31, the second-best record in the NL. Of course, the other side of that coin: They are in second place in their division. If the Giants don’t come back to the pack or the Dodgers can’t get hot enough to overtake them, the Dodgers face the specter of a one-game playoff against the Padres with the loser going home. The Giants are playing one heck of a spoiler as the season approaches the halfway mark.

Yet another game that I can’t wait to turn the page on. So let’s look at the numbers and move along. As you’ll recall, the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high-leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. And now, let’s get to the results.

Up Next: The Cubs open a three-game series in Milwaukee Monday night. It’s hard not to let yourself feel like these three games are pretty important. The Brewers have got things going in the right direction and jumped out to a three-game lead in the division while the Cubs were losing Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In a nightmare scenario, the Brewers could sweep this series and be up six games in the division. That would put Jed Hoyer into a strange spot if it did occur. Do you dismiss everything good that happened in May and early June because of six really bad days in late June?

So this series feels really important to at least grab one game and it sure would help to take two. Certainly, there will still be half a season left after this series. Regardless of a sweep in either direction, both teams would be very much alive and very much in contention with one another as the season moves forward. Of course, if the Brewers stay hot, the pressure that it puts on the Reds (now six back) and Cardinals (up to eight back) is getting very real. The Cardinals look as disheveled as I’ve seen them in a long, long time. Of course, that franchise has a long history of bouncing back, so I’m not even writing them off just yet.

Anyway, as to this series. The Cubs have their two best pitchers lined up for the first two games, so that’s a good thing. That means it is Kyle Hendricks tonight and Zach Davies tomorrow. Jake Arrieta will throw the finale on Wednesday. Despite last night’s rough outing, I think I have to still consider Alzolay the third starter if we were lining things up. As for the Brewers? They have their three main guys lined up for this series. This is my shocked face. That means Freddy Peralta, Brandon Woodruff and Corbin Burnes are the starters for the series. So things won’t be getting any easier for Cubs hitters. This figures to be another tough series.

Once again, I watched this game so you didn’t have to.

The Cubs lost to the Dodgers 7-1 Sunday night in Los Angeles.

If you thought I was going to provide a traditional-style recap of this stinker, think again.

Here are three key takeaways from this game, about the only things you need to know, and then we move on:

Adbert Alzolay just didn’t have it. You could tell his command was off in the first inning and he only got out of it with a double play. Then... that awful second inning. I’ll spare you the play-by-play carnage, but when Alzolay wasn’t missing the strike zone, his pitches were being sent out of the ballpark.

I have to think Alzolay might not be 100 percent yet after the blister that sent him to the injured list earlier this month.

Hey, look! Javy Baez hit a home run! [VIDEO]

That was the Cubs’ only run and one of only four Cubs hits.

The bullpen did solid work. Tommy Nance (career-longest outing, three innings) and Rex Brothers (two innings, longest outing since 2017) combined for five innings, allowing three hits and one run and striking out nine. That lowered the Cubs bullpen’s MLB-best ERA to 2.67. (No, you don’t want to know the Cubs starters’ ERA. You do? All right, it’s bad, but not as bad as I thought. It’s 4.60, ranking 23rd in MLB.)

What I want to do with this recap instead is to look at where the Cubs and Brewers have been over the last month as the teams head into an important matchup beginning tonight in Milwaukee.

On May 27, the Cubs defeated the Pirates 5-3 in Pittsburgh. The Cardinals were in first place in the NL Central; the Cubs were half a game behind and the Brewers three games back.

Since that date the Brewers have gone 20-8 to take over first place; in that same span the Cubs are 15-14. (The Cardinals have been awful since May 27, going 9-19 and falling into fourth place.)

But let’s take a look at the teams the Cubs and Brewers have been playing since May 27.

Of the 29 games the Cubs have played since that date, just six have been against teams that were under .500 at the time the Cubs faced them (Marlins and Reds, and the Reds have gone on a hot streak since and are currently at .500). They’ve played 14 games against the top three teams by record in the NL (Giants, Padres, Dodgers) and four more against the NL East-leading Mets. Their record in those 18 games: 8-10. Not great, but not horrid, either.

Meanwhile, the Brewers have had possibly the easiest schedule of any team in MLB over the 28 games noted above. Of the 28 games, just three were played against a team that was over .500 at the time the Brewers played them — a three-game set against the Reds in Milwaukee June 14-16. The Reds swept that series.

Fourteen of the 28 games were against the last-place Pirates and two teams bringing up the rear in the NL West — the Rockies and Diamondbacks. You will not be surprised to learn the Brewers went 11-3 in those games — and one of the losses was to the D-backs, breaking Arizona’s 17-game losing streak.

So while it might appear that the Brewers are hot and the Cubs are not, consider the quality of the opposition. The Brewers, true, are doing what a good team should do against bad teams. The Cubs, meanwhile, are holding their own against the league’s best and are 21-14 (.600) against teams currently under .500. Meanwhile, the Brewers are 27-22 (.551) against teams currently under .500. They’re 8-3 against the Dodgers and Padres and have yet to play the Giants or Mets. Their schedule gets tougher after the All-Star break while the Cubs’ gets somewhat “easier.” In fact, after this road trip concludes, the Cubs begin a stretch of 27 games against teams currently at .500 or below (it includes a four-game set at Wrigley vs. the .500 Reds). That includes six against the awful D-backs and three vs. the Rockies.

The Brewers took six of nine from the Cubs in April, with two of those three series at Wrigley Field, but that was when the Cubs collectively were not playing well. You’re going to say, “But Al, the Cubs aren’t playing that well now, either,” and you’d be right about that. The Cubs will definitely have to get the bats going to have any chance in the series beginning tonight.

The Cubs trail the Brewers by three games entering the series beginning this evening in Milwaukee, so the best-case scenario — an unlikely Cubs sweep — would result in a division-lead tie. I’m certainly not expecting that, but it would be nice for the Cubs to go there and take two of three. It won’t be easy. Kyle Hendricks will start for the Cubs in Monday’s series opener and Freddy Peralta is the Brewers’ scheduled starter. Game time is 7:10 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.

The Cubs go for the series split.

Sunday notes:

MAGIC NUMBER 10: Anthony Rizzo yesterday hit his 10th homer of the season, giving him 10 seasons of at least 10 home runs since 2012. he is just the seventh Cub with at least 10 10-homer seasons. The others: Ernie Banks (17), Billy Williams (14), Ron Santo (13), Sammy Sosa (12), Gabby Hartnett (12) and Ryne Sandberg (11).

DON’T TRY TO RUN ON WILLSON: Willson Contreras yesterday threw out the Dodgers Chris Taylor attempting to steal third base and also picked him off at third base. Since the start of 2016, Contreras leads the majors with 22 catcher pickoffs, well ahead of Yan Gomes, who is second with 12.

HEY-HEY, J-HEY! Jason Heyward has gone 7-for-9 (.778) with three runs, a double and three walks in the first three games of this Dodgers series, reaching safely in 10 of 12 plate appearances.

LOTS OF POWER FROM LOTS OF PLACES: The Cubs are the only major league team with six players hitting at least 10 homers this season. Javier Báez has hit 17 homers, followed by Kris Bryant (15), Joc Pederson (11), Willson Contreras (12), Anthony Rizzo (10) and Patrick Wisdom (10).

Adbert Alzolay threw five solid innings against the Dodgers May 5 at Wrigley Field. He allowed two runs (one on a homer by Max Muncy) and struck out seven.

Alzolay had been really good with walks this year until the game in San Diego where a blister forced him out of the game and eventually to the injured list. He walked five in that game, nearly one-third of his season total of 17.

Personally, I’d take another outing like the one vs. the Dodgers at Wrigley Field in toinght’s contest.

The Cubs beat up on Clayton Kershaw May 4 at Wrigley Field, scoring four runs in the first inning and knocking him out of the game. He threw 39 pitches in that inning.

Kershaw’s last five starts haven’t been all that great, either: 4.50 ERA, 1.233 WHIP, five HR allowed in 30 innings. Kershaw’s still a good pitcher, don’t get me wrong, but he is not quite the same guy who won three Cy Young Awards from 2011-14. He can be hit, and as I pointed out yesterday, Cubs hitters seem to like facing southpaws this year.
