Cubs walk it off in 4-1 victory

When a team is going good and winning bunches of games, they’ll win in a number of different ways. This past weekend, they were winning and they were doing it largely on the back of an offense, in particular Frank Schwindel. In the four-game sweep of the Pirates, the Cubs offense pounded out 30 runs, scoring at least six in every game. A team is going to win more times than not when it scores six runs.

This Reds series was different. The Cubs scored four on two occasions and 11 across the three games. This series was separated by an eyelash. The Cubs won the first game by a run, lost the second game by a run and so here we were in the finale in extra innings. The series was that close. In the end, the Cubs got a walk-off three-run homer and they got to play that song and fly that flag one more time on what has been a remarkable homestand.

Say what you want about WPA, but I don’t think there are going to be too many qualms about this one. The three players on the Hero podiums? All three of the pitchers who worked in the game. Three Cubs pitchers worked ten innings and allowed six hits and one walk. They allowed only one run. And they sent the Reds on their way frustrated. The Reds are far from done, but by winning four of six games over the last six weeks of the baseball season, the Cubs have left a giant dent in the Reds’ playoff chances.

I have made no secret that I am certainly someone who could be coaxed into “letting the rope go” on the tug-of-war that is a season. Once you are done and over with, development and health of players is paramount. If you win a game or two along the way, so be it. Oddly, if you hired me to be GM, I think I might find a way to “help” the team along to some extra losses in a down season. But, if I were the manager, I’d be managing like heck, particularly when facing a team who is still in contention as these Reds are. I’m a competitive person by nature and if I play, I’m going to play to win. To that end, I tip my cap to these Cubs. They have not quit fighting at any point.

When I last talked about this, a few of you politely pointed out that the benefits in baseball aren’t nearly as immense and as immediate as the other professional sports. While I can’t disagree with any of that, I will point out that inherently, baseball is a long run sport. Somewhat counterintuitively, microscopic differences can add up over time because the seasons are so long. The difference from the best team to the worst is probably pretty significant these days. But certainly the fifth from the 25th? And definitely the 10th from the 20th, there just isn’t that much difference.

To me, the best teams are always just trying to squeeze out an extra percent or two here and an extra percent or two there. As the rules are presently constituted, having a higher draft pick means a higher draft pool and a higher international draft pool. Again, the differences aren’t huge. Certainly, even the best scout isn’t going to tell you that player A is going to be 10 wins better than player B during his career. At least not when we are talking about two guys who with consensus are first round picks. Certainly, picking in the 8-12 range, the Cubs are going to be picking a consensus good first round pick. The way baseball works, there is a very good chance that whomever the Cubs target at their spot will be there. So then the difference is the amount of money available in each the draft pool and for international free agency.

If I want to win every year, I need to start maximizing from before a team is even drafted. I want to outdraft you, outdevelop you, outcoach you, outfinance you, outmarket you. There are so many ways to win and the more ways I do that, the better position the team is in year after year. I do think it matters. But I don’t think you need to just go into full tank mode. So I don’t blame them for not. It’s a fine line. I realize I’m at least walking through “talking out of both sides of your mouth” neighborhood. I just think the answer is nuanced and not one size fits all.

Either way, the Cubs did it again. Let’s go to the numbers on another victory. As you’ll recall, the Heroes and Goats are determined by WPA (Win Probability Added) and are not in any way subjective. Many days WPA will not tell the story of what happened, but often it can give at least a glimpse to who rose to the occasion in a high-leverage moment or who didn’t get the job done in that moment. And now, let’s get to the results.

The Cubs right fielder won the game with a three-run walkoff homer.

In the bottom of the 10th inning of a well-pitched, low-scoring game, Patrick Wisdom of the Cubs had singled Willson Contreras, who was the Manfred man, to third base.

Nobody out, Jason Heyward the scheduled hitter. Reds manager David Bell decided to place his defense in a five-man infield, two-man outfield setup.

Heyward took two pitches, one strike, one ball, then hit a baseball well over all the Cincinnati fielders [VIDEO].

As you can see in the video, it bounced off a railing at the back of the right-field bleachers, nearly reaching Sheffield Avenue. That’s not an easy thing to do with the larger bleacher structure since the most recent reconstruction. Happ, as noted, now has 21 home runs, just three short of his career high (24, set in his rookie year, 2017).

Alec Mills got through the first three innings unscored-on, thanks in part to getting Nick Castellanos to hit into a double play in the first. It was a good thing Mills got Castellanos to hit another DP ball in the fourth, because Cubs nemesis Joey Votto smacked a solo homer right after that. Votto wound up 2021 hitting seven home runs at Wrigley Field in just 23 at-bats.

Mills got easily through the fifth and sixth and then was lifted after just 73 pitches. I didn’t quite understand that. He was cruising, the pitch count was low, the weather conditions were perfect and his batting-order spot wasn’t due up.

But Rowan Wick entered the game and threw two scoreless innings, allowing a pair of harmless two-out hits, one in the seventh, one in the eighth, an efficient outing.

The Cubs, though, could not score, and barely had any presence on the bases. After a beautifully-placed bunt single by Sergio Alcántara with two out in the second, the Cubs had just two baserunners from the third through the ninth, both on walks. Neither runner got past first base, and after the second of those walks, to Alcántara in the fifth, 13 straight Cubs were retired by Reds pitching.

The Cubs also got two solid relief innings from Codi Heuer, who struck out a pair and recorded six outs on just 19 pitches (14 strikes).

That set up the Cubs’ winning rally. As noted above, Wisdom singled Contreras to third. Then Wisdom took second on defensive indifference. Curiously, the Reds did not intentionally pass Heyward to set up a force at any base. That was a good thing for the Cubs when J-Hey smashed his home run, winning the game. Heyward’s homer hit the video board in right field and went a long way:

Brad Brach. You remember him with the Cubs, I’m sure. Four months’ worth of not-great pitching in 2019 (6.13 ERA in 42 appearances, with 28 walks in 39⅔ innings) before he was designated for assignment, then given his unconditional release in early August.
Another note: The time of this 10-inning game was 2:49. That’s the shortest Cubs extra-inning game by time since September 28, 2015, when the Cubs and Royals played 11 innings in 2:49. That game was also won by a walkoff homer, hit by Chris Denorfia.

The Cubs thus won the series from the Reds and are 6-1 so far on this homestand. Since August 22 they have the best record in the National League, 11-4. They held a pretty good Reds offense — Cincinnati came into this series second in the NL in runs — to just eight runs in three games. The Reds still have postseason hopes, but the Cubs won four of their last five from them and wound up the season 8-11 against Cincinnati after a 4-10 start.

This Cubs team has been playing solid baseball in almost every facet of the game in that 15-game stretch and yes, won games from the not-good Pirates and Twins — but also defeated playoff contenders in the White Sox and Reds. They’ve been fun to watch and walkoff home runs are always exciting.

The Cubs will certainly enjoy their off day Thursday and Friday afternoon they will begin a three-game weekend series against their old buddies Kris Bryant, Tommy La Stella, Jose Quintana and the San Francisco Giants. Kyle Hendricks is the Cubs’ scheduled starter Friday. At this writing the Giants, who also have Thursday off, don’t have a listed starting pitcher. Game time Friday is 1:20 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network (and also on MLB Network outside the Cubs and Giants market territories).

HAPP-ENINGS: Ian Happ, last 23 games since August 13: 376/.411/.776 (32-for-85) with seven doubles, nine home runs and 15 runs. His season OPS has gone from .599 to .725 in that span and he is now in positive bWAR territory at 1.0. Happ has eight multi-hit games in that 23-game span, including four of the last six. Lastly, he’s got an eight-game hitting streak in which he’s batting .429 (15-for-35) with four home runs.

HOME RUN NOTES: The Cubs’ three homers Tuesday gave them 184 for the season. That projects to 213 for the season, which would be fourth-most in franchise history, one ahead of 1998 (212). Also, the Cubs have homered in 14-straight games dating to Game 1 of the doubleheader on August 25, the longest active streak in the National League.

MORE DINGER NEWS: The Cubs have nine players in double figures in home runs this year: current players Willson Contreras, Ian Happ, Rafael Ortega, Frank Schwindel and Patrick Wisdom and the departed Javier Báez, Kris Bryant, Joc Pederson and Anthony Rizzo. Two more Cubs, David Bote (eight) and Jason Heyward (seven), have a chance to get to 10 home runs before the end of the season.

STRIKEOUT UPDATE: The Cubs struck out 10 times Tuesday, bringing their season total to 1,382. They have struck out at least 10 times in 23 of the 36 games since the selloff, and in those 36 games have averaged 10.78 strikeouts per game. If they keep up that average, they will break the franchise record for Ks (1,518, set in 2015) in the first game of the doubleheader September 24 vs. the Cardinals, and will break the MLB record (1,595, set by the 2019 Tigers) October 1 in St. Louis.

Alec Mills seems thisclose to having a breakthrough which would make him more than just a No. 5 starter. He threw eight outstanding innings against a really good White Sox offense, then in his next start ran out of gas in the sixth against the Pirates.

He made two starts vs. the Reds in July — July 2 in Cincinnati (two hits, two runs, nine strikeouts in 5⅔ innings) and July 29 at Wrigley Field (six innings, three earned runs, but NO strikeouts). Overall since the All-Star break Mills has a 3.64 ERA and 1.404 WHIP in nine starts covering 47 innings, which is pretty good. He’s even done pretty well against Joey Votto — Votto has homered off him twice, but overall is 3-for-15 with three strikeouts.

Hoping for good things from Millsy tonight.

Vladimir Gutierrez made his MLB debut against the Cubs May 28 at Wrigley Field and threw five good innings. He threw 6⅓ good innings against the Cubs July 27 at Wrigley Field. Both of those were pre-selloff. But he also threw 6⅓ good innings against the new-look Cubs August 17 in Cincinnati.

Overall, in fact, Gutierrez is on a decent run over his last eight starts: 3.20 ERA, 1.178 WHIP. Hopefully Mills will be a good match for him.

The 2020 Game Thread procedure will be the same as the one used in previous years. Here’s how it works.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page, two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page. The First Pitch Thread and all the overflow threads will be published in that stream, as well as the recap. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post, and at the time I write the recap I will rename the stream “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of Week) Game Threads” so you can go back and find every thread related to that particular game.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread, all the overflow threads and recap in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). They will also appear in the game’s StoryStream as noted above.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at one hour, two hours and 2:45 after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
