Cubs pull one out late to win the game and the series.

Baseball is fun. At the tail end of a brutal stretch of games that saw the Cubs play a ton of teams expected to make the playoffs, the Cubs go on the road and win four of six. To be fair, the Diamondbacks are very likely the fourth-best team in their division, so they are a long shot at best. Still, even after dropping two of three, they are over .500 in what pretty clearly appears to be the best division in the National League and possibly all of baseball (depending on if you prioritize top to bottom competitiveness or top-heavy dominance as in the AL East). Winning two out of three in Arizona is nothing to shake a stick at.

You could certainly have a chicken/egg debate on improved pitching or more consistent scoring being the key to the turn around. The Cubs were stomped a week ago at home against the Dodgers, losing the three-game set by a combined score of 20-3. But in these six games, they allowed a total of only 18 runs. They scored a total of 27. Allowing three runs per game is going to work. Scoring four and a half? That’ll work too. If there was such a thing as bottling that up and taking it home with you, you’d want that for sure.

The challenges this week? Getting back on track at home is priority one. The Cubs are just 4-11 at Wrigley Field so far this year. If this team isn’t going to spend all of June on trade watch, they are going to have to turn that around. The second key is going to be health. The Cubs have been besieged by a ton of what are hopefully minor injuries. The result is a bloated injured list. This is a bad time for that. The Cubs started a stretch of 14 straight games without an off day on Friday. This week starts with three against the Pirates and then finishes with four more games against these same Diamondbacks. That’s followed by a four-game set with the Reds on the road.

In these long stretches of games, health is a little extra important. It’s hard to find an off day for a guy who is banged up and if a pitcher goes down, it can really back up on your bullpen trying to distribute the load. To that end, hopefully Marcus Stroman is able to return in this upcoming series and he is healthy and strong. We’d just seen his best start of the year and so this missed time is unfortunate on every level.

Let’s turn our attention to yesterday’s game. We start with my three positives from Sunday’s game.

Justin Steele. After going with the three Heroes yesterday, I’m going with someone who fell short of the podiums today. Justin has been struggling and you always wonder about a guy taking every fifth game at the highest level for the first time. So this was a feel good start. Justin allowed only three hits and two walks while striking out 10 over six innings. The Diamondbacks offense isn’t world beating, but this is still an encouraging performance and hints at what Steele can maybe be capable of.

Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel. In Saturday’s game, these two both finished on the Goat side of the ledger. Wisdom particularly had been struggling a bit lately and struck out three times in four at bats Saturday. So for each to bounce back with a pair of hits is great to see. Wisdom had a solo homer as well as a double that led to the winning run. That run was driven in by Schwindel. Would haves and could haves will kill you, but even with as lousy as the start to this season has been, if Schwindel’s long fly in San Diego had travelled another couple of feet, the Cubs could have maybe come home with five of six and Schwindel would have been a huge part of that after his own terrible start.

Rowan Wick. It wasn’t pretty. He inherited a runner and then allowed a single of his own. With just a one-run lead, it was tense for sure. But he bounced back with a pop up and an at’em ground ball right to Jonathan Villar who worked with Andrelton Simmons for the first time, turning a smooth double play to end it. Wick hasn’t dominated, but he has been effective.

Top to bottom, the key is if some of these guys can build some confidence and sustain improved play.

Let’s get to the Heroes and Goats from Sunday’s win.

Hence Wick in the Superhero spot.

*Diamondbacks Play of the Game: And of course, that leads us to the batter before that. These are games four, five and six of 14 straight games. The Pirates come in with back-to-back wins of their own to pull their record up to 15-19, just ahead of the Cubs in the Central. Wade Miley (0-0, 9.00) makes his second start as a Cub and first at home. Hopefully, the Cubs can keep the positive momentum from this just-completed road trip going.

Shades of the last two months of 2021!

After last summer’s selloff, the Cubs didn’t win many games. But Patrick Wisdom, who set a Cubs rookie record for home runs, and Frank Schwindel, who won a couple of Player of the Week awards, at least gave us some entertaining baseball.

Sunday afternoon, Wisdom and Schwindel provided key hits and another ninth-inning rally, and the Cubs took their series in Arizona with a 3-2 victory.

Let’s start at the end. The game’s tied 2-2 heading to the ninth. Wisdom, who had homered earlier, led off the inning with a double.

Schwindel followed, looked pretty bad on a couple of pitches, then sent an excuse-me RBI single to right [VIDEO].

That’s all the Cubs got in the ninth, and Scott Effross, who had thrown a scoreless eighth, allowed a leadoff single in the ninth and was replaced by Rowan Wick.

Wick gave up another single, but induced Daulton Varsho to pop up and then got pinch-hitter David Peralta to hit into a game-ending double play [VIDEO].

The Cubs opened the scoring in this game early — as in the second pitch of the game to Rafael Ortega [VIDEO].

Before Sunday there might have been some question about whether Steele would remain in the Cubs’ rotation. Now? He’ll certainly start again against the D-Backs next weekend at Wrigley Field.

Chris Martin threw a scoreless seventh, but the Cubs could not score in the eighth. Scott Effross, who’s been lights-out lately, got the higher-leverage outing I’d been hoping David Ross would trust him with, put together yet another 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the eighth. Effross hasn’t allowed an earned run since April 17, a span of 12 appearances.

And, here’s where we came in with this recap. The Cubs wrapped up a winning road trip with four wins in six games, their first winning trip since they also won four of six in Pittsburgh and St. Louis to end the 2021 season. On this trip the Cubs outscored their opponents 27-18. They have evened up their road record at 9-9; now let’s see if they can start playing better at Wrigley Field, where they’re 4-11.

Also, all of the Cubs’ last three wins have been posted due to ninth-inning rallies. That’s absolutely a good thing.

The Cubs return to Wrigley Field to begin a seven-game homestand Monday night. First up is a three-game set against the Pirates. Monday’s Cubs starter is Wade Miley. At the time of this recap, the Pirates did not have a starter listed for Monday. Game time is 6:40 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.

The Cubs go for the series win.

Sunday notes...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RAFAEL ORTEGA!: The Cubs outfielder turns 31 today. Over his last six games, Ortega is hitting .294/.350/.412 (5-for-17) with two doubles and two walks. The Cubs sure seem to have a lot of birthdays this month. Earlier this month: Jonathan Villar, Willson Contreras, Mychal Givens, Nico Hoerner. Coming up later in May: Conner Menez.

PLAYING BETTER: Since ending a five-game losing streak with the first win of this road trip, the Cubs have outscored their opponents 24-16 and have won three of five.

THE SPLITS: Cubs at home: 4-11. Cubs on road: 8-9, Cubs in day games: 7-5, Cubs in night games: 5-15 Cubs vs. LH starters: 5-5, Cubs vs. RH starters: 7-15. Cubs in one-run games: 2-8, Cubs in all other games: 10-12.

PLAYERS, LOTS OF THEM: The Cubs have used 36 players so far this year. While that might seem like a lot, it matches the current MLB average. The Diamondbacks have used 42, and the Reds and Giants lead MLB in this category with 44. The Rockies have used the fewest to date, 31.

Justin Steele left his last start with some sort of left thumb injury, but he’s good to go tonight.

Of his six starts this year, only one has been anything close to good, the rest have been a struggle to not issue walks, mainly. That’s what is standing in the way of Steele becoming a quality MLB starter — command and control.

He has never faced the Diamondbacks or anyone on their active roster.

Humberto Castellanos and Nick Castellanos are not related.

There, that’s about all I know about Humberto, who, per the chart below, is mostly a soft-tosser. His K rate (6.3 per nine innings) bears this out.

He started this year in the pen and then was moved into the rotation, and the results as a starter have been decent (4.09 ERA, but a good 1.091 WHIP). He has never faced the Cubs or anyone on the Cubs active roster.

So, this one should be interesting.

The 2022 Game Thread procedure will be like last years, similar to what we’ve used for Spring Training.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
