Cubs unable to hold an early 3-0 lead and lose 4-3

I had to double check to see if my memory is accurate and I was right. This is the first appearance of Ildemaro Vargas as a Superhero. It’s well earned after Vargas keyed the Cubs’ third inning rally. After a the Cubs opened the inning with a double and a single, Vargas drove in the first two runs with a triple and then he scored via sacrifice fly. So Vargas accounted for all three of the runs. Vargas had been swinging a pretty hot bat at Iowa and so it’s good for him to carry that over to the big club.

Unfortunately, that was about all of the good for the Cubs on Friday night. Drew Smyly had also thrown two scoreless innings to start. But he gave all three runs right back in the bottom of the inning, deflating any momentum that might have been created by a rally from the bottom of the order. He allowed the go ahead run the next inning and that was just about it.

The Cubs offense managed a total of five hits and drew four walks in this game. The third-inning rally accounted for three of the hits. They put together only two hits and three walks the rest of the way and so it was largely a matter of time before the Diamondbacks put it away. So many times we see the Cubs post a bunch of hits but due to poor sequencing very few runs. This was just the opposite. They did a very good job of sequencing what they did get all into three batters in the third inning. That allowed them to score three on a night when the offense was by and large stifled.

The schedule is finally starting to let up a bit on this team. They are going to face some teams that are less overpowering. We’ll see if the Cubs can turn that into some wins and some confidence. If they don’t put together a hot streak and soon, then as the calendar creeps towards and into June, it’s going to be a month of waiting to see who is traded and what the return might be.

Let’s try to find three positives from Friday’s game.

Vargas. I have to give him the top spot given that he contribute to all of the scoring.

Frank Schwindel. Two hits for Frank. If only that long fly in San Diego had a few more feet, this would be quite the feel good trip after a horrible start to the season.

Conner Menez. I have to admit to not having seen the move to acquire him, or the one bringing him to the team. But he threw a scoreless inning in his debut.

With that, we move onto the Heroes and Goats from last night’s game.

Up Next: In game two of the three-game set, Kyle Hendricks (2-3, 4.38) takes the hill. Kyle was magnificent last time out. He’ll face Zac Gallen (2-0, 0.95) who has been fantastic in five starts this year. He’s been largely unhittable, allowing only 16 hits across 28⅓ innings. The only surprising thing in his line is that a pitcher who has been that dominant is still averaging fewer than six innings per start. Still, he’s made the most of what he’s had. This looks like a tough one. Hopefully, the Cubs bats can figure him out a bit tonight and give Kyle something to work with.

If the Cubs had better defenders, they might have won this game.

The boxscore from the Cubs’ 4-3 loss to the Diamondbacks does not show any errors made by the Cubs.

And yet, I am going to assert to you that poor defensive play was the major cause of this defeat.

Let’s start at the beginning.

Drew Smyly put the D-Backs down scoreless in the first two innings and then the Cubs got to work offensively. Jason Heyward led off the third with a double and advanced to third on a single by Jonathan Villar.

That brought up Ildemaro Vargas [VIDEO].

The throw was offline and Vargas scored to make it 3-0 Cubs.

All of that was off our old pal Zach Davies. Incidentally, at one point in the broadcast it was noted that Davies had “off-field issues” in 2021, without elaborating. Hmmm — we didn’t hear anything about that last year, or at least I didn’t.

Anyway, that top of the third was good!

What happened in the bottom of the inning wasn’t. A one-out triple by Cooper Hummel was followed by another ground out, so Smyly was one out away from getting out of the inning. A double down the left-field line scored Hummel to make it 3-1.

That’s where the sketchy defense started.

Check out this play [VIDEO].

Now, that’s not necessarily an easy play but I have the sense that Nico Hoerner, who was unavailable to start, would have made it, or at least knocked the ball down and kept the runner at third.

The next hitter was Smith [VIDEO].

Sorry, but Ortega is not a good major league right fielder. Seiya Suzuki, who was also unavailable to start, would have made that catch because he’s a good right fielder. Or, with Suzuki out, why isn’t Jason Heyward in right field? (I know, I know, the Cubs don’t really have a decent choice in center other than Heyward.)

So the game is now tied, and with better defense maybe only one run scores in that inning.

The D-Backs took a 4-3 lead in the fourth on a wild pitch by Smyly with runners on first and third with one out.

Smyly completed six innings. He is the first Cubs pitcher not named Hendricks or Stroman to accomplish that this year (and it’s only the fifth time any Cubs pitcher has done that). The bullpen, on this night Robert Gsellman, Conner Menez and Chris Martin, did a good job of keeping the Cubs in the game, throwing three shutout innings and allowing two hits, no walks and striking out three. Incidentally, Menez looks like a keeper. He had some MLB success with the Giants the last couple of years and I’d like to see him stick around. Fun fact: Menez is the grandson of Bill Plummer, who played in two games for the 1968 Cubs. Plummer was traded in early 1969 for Ted Abernathy, played most of his career as a Reds backup and eventually was a long-time coach and manager, mostly in the Mariners system, managing the MLB Mariners for one year, 1992.

The Cubs did have a chance to get back in the game in the eighth. With two out, Willson Contreras reached on an error and Ian Happ and Patrick Wisdom walked. But Alfonso Rivas flied to center to end the inning, and the Cubs went down 1-2-3 in the ninth, retired by Mark Melancon on just 11 pitches. The Cubs fell to 2-8 in one-run games.

Here is one bit of good news: Frank Schwindel had two hits and is hitting the ball with authority:

About the Apple TV+ broadcast, I have these comments: Visually, the broadcast is first-rate. The cameras look sharp and the graphics are easy to read. The announcers are ... just okay. As usual, a TV channel thinks a three-person booth is a good idea and it’s ... just not. I simply do not see what Katie Nolan added to the broadcast at all. If it had just been Stephen Nelson and Cliff Floyd with Heidi Watney as field reporter, that would have been fine, though there were times when Watney’s interviews distracted from the action. And Nelson mis-called a couple of plays, When Menez entered and retired Smith to end the seventh, Nelson said, “One pitch, one out,” except Menez had thrown two pitches to Smith. And when Hummel struck out to end the eighth, Nelson said he was called out on strikes — nope, Hummel swung and missed. Overall, though, the broadcast was all right and I didn’t have any of the technical glitches that some others reported.

Seriously, though, the Cubs need better defense. Some complained when the Cubs signed Andrelton Simmons because he was such a bad hitter last year, but Villar’s OPS is currently .554. How much worse could Simmons be?

The Cubs will try to even up the series Saturday evening. Kyle Hendricks will get the start for the Cubs and Zac Gallen will go for Arizona. Game time is 7:10 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.

In Smyly’s last outing against the D-Backs, September 21, 2021 at Chase Field, he came into the game after our old buddy Jesse Chavez was the opener for Atlanta and he threw 3⅓ innings and allowed one run, on only 37 pitches.

Given this bullpen has been a bit overworked lately, he’ll have to go longer than that tonight.

Zach Davies started out this year like he pitched last year for the Cubs — a 5.40 ERA and high walk rate (10 in 18⅓ innings) in four starts in April.

But then in his two May starts, he has thrown 11x innings without allowing an earned run and the walk rate is down (three in 11⅓ innings).

One thing you will notice about the pitch selection/velocity chart for Davies below is that his fastball (listed as “sinker”) velocity is up this year, to 89.1 miles per hour. That same pitch last year: 88 miles per hour (for reference, I’ve also included that chart below). This suggests Davies might have been injured part or all of 2021, if he’s throwing a bit faster now than he did then.

So be it. Willson Contreras is 9-for-34 (.265) against Davies with two doubles and two home runs, and Ian Happ, though he is just 1-for-9 against Davies, has also walked four times.

Let’s hope we see the bad old Davies tonight.

The 2022 Game Thread procedure will be like last years, similar to what we’ve used for Spring Training.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
