Cubs bats are subdued again in a 3-1 loss

When the Cubs front office decided to “break up the band” one of the reasons was that for far too long the offense was relatively homogenous. Basically, they would all feast off of the same kind of pitching and they’d all slump against other kinds of pitching. Obviously, the turnover of the roster is nowhere near done and to be fair, all teams go through slumps. But the Cubs are still very much in team feast or famine.

To be fair, this Zac Gallen kid appears to be the real deal and the Cubs did hang in there just enough to draw three walks, have two hits, score a run against him and he was out of the game with five innings pitched. I’ll spare you overexplaining ERA, but Gallen came in at 1.05, so one run in five innings isn’t an abject failure by any means.

Still, the bottom line is that a night after losing with only five hits the Cubs lost with four. They’ve scored just three runs in their last two games. If we define the cutoff for expecting to win at three runs allowed (falls in line with the quality start extended out), then the Cubs have pitched well enough to win seven of 11. They’ve won six of those, so even with a crude assumption, they aren’t massively underperforming.

None of that makes any of this less frustrating. Also, Wednesday night’s game wasn’t against a Gallen-like starter. Gallen is making a serious bid to start the All-Star game and barring disaster for him, looks definitely headed to the staff. But that doesn’t explain the results of the night before. All we can hope at this point is that the offensive woes don’t extend to a third game.

Let’s turn our attention to three positives from last night’s game.

Brandon Hughes has to be my number one. I love a clean inning out of the pen. Well, how about five batters, five outs? I’m always trying to pump the brakes on a new guy. Wait until the scouting catches up to them and see what happens. His rise to the majors has been meteoric and the results fantastic over his first two outings.

Credit where it is due. The Cubs had four hits. Yan Gomes had two of them including the lone RBI on a fourth inning double. At .266/.288/.422 he’s largely above career averages so far. He’s been a very good pickup. Much has been said about the potential for trading Willson Contreras. A different option, though it would net less, would be trading Gomes who would have value for a team with an injured or aging catcher down the stretch.

Christopher Morel merits consideration here with a walk and a stolen base in a tight game. But for the same reason, I’m going with Scott Effross. He and Hughes transformed their careers together in the minor leagues and now they are for the moment at least, extremely effective pieces of a very strong bullpen. Effross faced five batters and recorded four outs including three strikeouts. I don’t think I’m framing it wrong when I say that Scott and Keegan Thompson have been the two most consistent Cubs pitchers. Both are Cubs draft picks. They appear to finally be finding their way out of that desert.

With that, we turn our attention to the Heroes and Goats from last night’s game.

Kyle appears to have corrected course after a rough start to the season. He’s also been very good at home.
Sometimes, the other team just plays better.

The Cubs played a pretty good game Thursday night at Wrigley Field — where, suddenly, it was nearly 80 degrees after being in the 50s the rest of the week.

Marcus Stroman returned from the injured list with five decent innings. The bullpen locked it down for the remaining four.

But Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen and four Arizona relievers were just better. Gallen, who has been one of the better starters in the league this year, gave the Cubs just two hits and a run and the Cubs couldn’t get anything going against their bullpen despite having RISP twice.

So, as the headline says, give a hat tip to the D-backs for their 3-1 win over the Cubs and move on to the next game. Arizona’s win snapped a six-game losing streak which the Cubs started by taking the last two games in Phoenix last weekend.

Before we do that, let’s take a look at what happened Thursday evening.

Stroman retired the first nine Arizona hitters before Daulton Varsho led off the fourth with a home run. One out later Ketel Marte singled and one out after that, he advanced to third on a passed ball. That was the key play of the inning, because if he had remained on first base, Josh Rojas’ single wouldn’t have scored him and Seiya Suzuki’s throw wouldn’t have gotten away at the plate for an error, allowing Rojas also to advance, where he scored on a single by David Peralta.

Upshot of all that? Maybe the D-backs score only two runs in the inning instead of three. (Not that it would have mattered, two would still have been enough to win the game.)

Overall, I thought it was a solid outing from Stroman, who has a 2.00 ERA and 0.778 WHIP over his last three starts, with just one walk in 18 innings. He’s lowered his season ERA by over four runs in that span.

The Cubs did get one run back in the bottom of the fourth. Willson Contreras led off with a walk and one out later moved to second on a groundout.

Yan Gomes doubled him in [VIDEO].

After that, the Cubs bullpen was lockdown solid. Scott Effross, Brandon Hughes and Robert Gsellman combined for four shutout innings, allowing two baserunners (a rare walk by Effross and a single). They struck out five.

That gave the Cubs a chance to get back in the game. In the sixth, Gomes singled and advanced to second on an error. The D-backs challenged the call at second. It was reviewed and ruled “call stands” [VIDEO].

One out later, Patrick Wisdom walked, but the runners were stranded when Christopher Morel popped into short left.

Again in the eighth, the Cubs put runners on. Suzuki reached on an error and with two out, Frank Schwindel doubled him to third. But Wisdom struck out to end the inning, and in the ninth, Mark Melancon retired three Cubs in order to end it. To circle back to the beginning of this recap, sometimes the other guy just plays better.

Here are some comments from Stroman about his outing

I agree with Stroman’s analysis of his outing — he competed well and for as long a layoff as he had while fighting COVID (he hadn’t pitched in 18 days), I thought this outing was quite good. He should be fine for his next start, which will be in Cincinnati next week.

One last note, on a strange Cubs split:

Day games: 8-4
Night games: 7-18

Should bode well for the rest of this series, right? (As I have previously noted, MLB.com has this split incorrect. It appears they are counting the April 22 game against the Pirates, which was moved from 1:20 to 7:05, as a day game. Baseball-reference has it listed correctly.)

Next up, the second game of this series against Arizona. Kyle Hendricks will start for the Cubs and Humberto Castellanos is the scheduled starter for the D-backs. Game time is 1:20 p.m. CT and though storms are in the forecast for later in the day, it looks like they’ll hold off until after the game is over. TV coverage Friday is on Marquee Sports Network (and also on MLB Network outside the Cubs and D-backs market territories).

Yan Gomes’ homer was the first off Gallen in 2021. It took a three-run rally off the Arizona bullpen in the ninth to win that game, though.

Gallen’s been really, really good this year, allowing just four runs in 34⅓ innings. The Cubs offense will have to be really, really good (along with a good outing from Stroman) to win this game.

The 2022 Game Thread procedure will be like last years, similar to what we’ve used for Spring Training.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
