Cubs win the opener in Cincinnati

There is a lot of baseball still to be played and so it’s important not to draw any sweeping conclusions. However, through one quarter of a season, Ian Happ is having the most productive year of his career. In batting average (.286), on base percentage (.399), BB% (15.7), K% (20.3), wOBA (.371), and wRC+ (138) he is posting the best numbers of his career.

The one bit of ice water that can be thrown on those numbers is that he also has the second-highest BABIP (.344) of his career. For comparison, he has a career number of .316. So that’s definitely a significant and surely unsustainable amount higher. But the context is important as Happ is a fast player who makes hard contact. That can allow a sustained higher than average BABIP. League average is usually somewhere in the vicinity of .300, so Happ does check out higher than average. But no question some regression is a near certainty this year.

Statheads will note immediately that there are a few numbers I didn’t list. Notably, slugging percentage and ISO. Ian is having a statistically odd season. He’s having a breakout year at the plate without his usual power. Many of you watch more of the games than I do. Does it appear that Happ has significantly changed his approach? Sacrificing some of his power for contact? Or is all of this a little fluky?

Or maybe, he just hasn’t faced the Reds yet. I kid, mostly. But Happ, a draftee out of the University of Cincinnati, has always crushed Reds pitching. Excepting three games and eight plate appearances against the A’s, Happ has a higher OPS (1.109) against the Reds than any other team. If we use 50 plate appearances as a minimum, the Cardinals are next (.990). That’s a wide gap. And also kudos to Ian for doing his best work against division foes (the Pirates are next at .969). Ian does even better when those games are in Cincinnati where he has a 1.272 OPS.

So it should come with little surprise that Ian came up with the big blast in the series opener, a three-run homer just as the Reds had pulled close and it looked like another lead might have gotten away. Ian’s season looks to be one of the fun things to watch as the rest of the season unfolds. Certainly for him, you don’t assume anything, but you have to love being off to a great start and still having 18 games left against the team you do best against.

Let’s take a look at three positives from Monday’s series-opening win.

Three up three down. Scott Effross and David Robertson each faced three batters and retired all three. Effross did it in the seventh after inheriting a runner on first and Robertson closed out the game for his sixth save. After a rocky weekend from the bullpen, a confidence building shutdown for each was just what the doctor ordered.

Ian Happ. Double, homer, walk, two runs, four RBI. Peak performance.

Alfonso Rivas and Seiya Suzuki. Both players have been slumping, but both had good nights at the plate. Rivas had a hit, a walk and a run scored. He did strikeout twice. After a hot start, the league caught up to him a bit. Hopefully, he’s turning a bit of a corner. Suzuki has a similar story. After a blistering start, he’s really cooled off. Last night, he a double, two walks, two runs scored and stole a base. When things were good early on, he had a near perfect command of the strike zone. So the two walks may be as important as the double.

Let’s take a look at the Heroes and Goats from last nights win.

The Cubs opened their road trip on a high note.

The Cubs have begun hitting for power over the last few games, and it’s starting to pay off with wins.

Patrick Wisdom homered in his fourth straight game and Ian Happ added a three-run shot that provided the margin of victory in a 7-4 Cubs win over the Reds Monday evening in Cincinnati.

The game started scoreless over the first three innings, but the Cubs were hitting fly balls that just barely missed going out of the yard, like this one, caught by Nick Senzel off Happ in the second inning [VIDEO].

In the fourth, Happ got revenge, of sorts. Seiya Suzuki led off with a double and Happ doubled him in [VIDEO].

It’s 4-0 and Drew Smyly is cruising. He ran out of gas in the sixth, where he served up a solo homer to Tommy Pham and then hit Joey Votto. One out later — and one out away from getting out of the inning — Aristides Aquino smacked a two-run homer to bring the Reds to within 4-3.

Aquino has been up and down to the minor leagues since his splashy debut in 2019, but he has absolutely worn out Cubs pitching: .300/.377/.783 with nine home runs in 60 at-bats. He hasn’t hit more than four homers against any other team.

The Cubs didn’t waste any time getting those three runs back. Christopher Morel led off the seventh with a single and two outs later, Suzuki walked.

After the walk, the Reds called on Luis Cessa in relief. Happ sent Cessa’s first pitch deep into the Cincinnati night [VIDEO].

WORDS OF WISDOM: Patrick Wisdom has hit home runs in three consecutive game. It’s the first time in his career he has done so and Wisdom is the first Cubs player with long balls in three straight games since Ian Happ did it September 6-8, 2021.

Drew Smyly’s overall numbers are decent enough, but in three starts in May he has a 5.52 ERA and 1.773 WHIP, which... aren’t good.

He faced the Reds once last year, August 10 in Atlanta, and the results weren’t great. Current Reds are hitting .217 (10-for-46) against him with four home runs (two by Aristides Aquino) and 12 strikeouts.

Speaking of “not good,” Vladimir Gutierrez’ 2022 season qualifies for those words. He’s made six starts and not one of them can be considered “decent.” He hasn’t completed the fifth inning in any of his six starts, and over the last three — yikes — 11.77 ERA, 2.231 WHIP, five home runs in 13 innings.

So that probably means he’ll blank the Cubs for five innings.

Seriously, though, this is a guy these Cubs should hit hard. Ian Happ, who loves to hit in GABP anyway (lifetime .342/.447/.784 with 13 HR in 111 AB), is 4-for-8 with two homers off Gutierrez.

The 2022 Game Thread procedure will be like last years, similar to what we’ve used for Spring Training.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
