The Cubs take an early lead and hold it.

I’ve long felt that both the Cubs and the White Sox have more important fish to fry than one another. I think some fans, particularly casual ones, worry about the other more than they should. I’m, of course, referring to a Cubs fan worrying about who the Sox are playing and rooting for them to lose and vice versa. That said, this is obviously not true when they are playing one another. So, unless you are rooting for the Cubs tanking for the first pick in next year’s draft, then Saturday night’s game was good news.

That is, the Cubs played well and they won. For me, the happy medium is actually what happened in this one. Keegan Thompson got the start with Wade Miley experiencing some shoulder discomfort. The future is never certain. A player can rise to the top overnight or an injury or some mechanical issues can derail a career in a hurry. That said, for the near term, Keegan looks like one of the key pieces. He’s been nothing shy of fantastic so far this year and so watching him succeed against a talented team like the White Sox is a good thing.

As an added plus, Nico Hoerner, another guy who looks to be a key piece of the near term puzzle for the Cubs had three hits. Every now and then I steal my three positives up here in the open and to be sure, Keegan and Nico are definitely positives from this game.

Speaking of those three positives, let’s turn our attention there.

Key performances from young players. Let’s combine our open here, three hits, a stolen base a run scored for Hoerner and five innings of one run ball for Thompson.

Important contributions from last year’s stars. Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel were two of the three players who were most productive down the stretch in 2021. Each had a pair of RBI on Saturday night.

A perfect inning out of the pen. Mychal Givens had one of those. Mychael has a 3.12 ERA over 17⅓ innings. This was the fifth perfect outing of the year for him. In 18 outings for Givens this year, 14 of them are scoreless.

And now, we turn our attention to the Heroes and Goats from Saturday’s win on the south side.

And a varied offense helped lead the team to victory.

The Cubs aren’t supposed to be good this year and the White Sox are, but the teams did a bit of a role reversal Saturday night.

Keegan Thompson held the Sox offense to one run in five innings, the Cubs got terrific bullpen work and the offense, led by Patrick Wisdom and Frank Schwindel, scored enough for a satisfying 5-1 victory on the South Side.

The Cubs scored in the first inning — again. This has become habit, and it’s a good one. The Cubs have outscored opponents in the first inning 39-20 this year. If only they could keep up that score ratio the rest of the game.

Christopher Morel singled on Johnny Cueto’s first pitch. Two outs later, and after Morel had stolen second, Wisdom looped an RBI double to right [VIDEO].

Pretty sure Thompson was uttering a game thread word there, but that was the only mistake he made in five solid innings. He allowed five hits, including the homer, walked one and struck out four. He threw a season-high 77 pitches and ended the outing with a 1.58 ERA. With 40 innings, Thompson is five innings short of qualifying for the league ERA lead, but if he had enough innings with that ERA he’d top the leaderboard (Joe Musgrove leads with 1.86).

The Cubs put two more on the board in the seventh. Simmons singled, and one out later advanced to third on a double by Willson Contreras. Cueto ran the count to 3-0 on Ian Happ, then Happ was intentionally passed to load the bases.

A couple of thoughts about this game: The full house on the South Side was pretty mellow, given that there have been issues during Saturday night Cubs/Sox games in the past. I didn’t see any fights and the area where I was sitting down the LF line was quiet all night, and once the Cubs added the two runs in the seventh, a lot of folks left early.

And though since I was at the game, I didn’t watch the broadcast, I did watch the highlights shown above (and others), and Len Kasper is so good calling games, and it has to be odd for him to be calling a Cubs game as a neutral Fox-TV announcer, but he did his usual excellent work.

He’s being too modest. I thought he really hit his spots well and apart from the hanging curveball to Burger, he shut the Sox down well, especially Tim Anderson, who’s their best hitter and the only guy in their regular lineup who’s really hitting at all right now.

Sunday, the Cubs go for a sweep — something they haven’t had at all this year, even in a two-game series. THE THOMPSON FILE: Keegan Thompson is one of four NL pitchers to have an ERA under 2.00 with at least 35 innings. The others: Miles Mikolas (1.96 ERA in 55 innings), Joe Musgrove (1.90 ERA in 52 innings) and Tony Gonsolin (1.62 ERA in 39 innings). Thompson has held opponents to a .293 OBP and a .604 OPS while pitching at least three innings in eight of his outings. More on Thompson below.

HOME SWEET HOME?: Tonight begins a stretch in which the Cubs play 18 of their next 23 games in Chicago through June 19, including 16 of those 23 at Wrigley Field. But... the Cubs are only 7-15 at home, 11-11 on the road.

SCORING EARLY: The Cubs have scored 37 runs in the first inning this season, the second-most by any team in baseball, trailing only the Angels (39) and their first-inning .883 OPS leads the majors.

SCORING ODDITY: In the last 39 match-ups against the White Sox since May 8, 2014, the Cubs have outscored the White Sox by 13 runs (187-174), but are 19-20 against them.

Ordinarily, had the Cubs stayed on rotation, Wade Miley and Drew Smyly would have thrown the two games against the White Sox. However, look at this:

Sox vs. LHP: .258/.324/.426, 12 HR in 298 PA
Sox vs. RHP: .228/.282/.343, 27 HR in 1,181 PA

So yeah, good idea to keep the lefties away from Sox RH power. (Marcus Stroman will go on Sunday, another good call.)

Thompson threw 3⅔ innings (46 pitches) against the Sox May 3 at Wrigley Field after Scott Effross was an “opener.” Thompson allowed four hits and one run and didn’t walk or strike out anyone. The run was a solo homer by Tim Anderson.

That was the night where it rained lightly through the entire game. Conditions will be better tonight.

Johnny Cueto! Hi old buddy! <waving>

In his career, Cueto has made 27 starts against the Cubs, not counting the NLDS game in 2016 where Javy Báez’ solo homer won the game for the Cubs.

It has, however, been a while. Cueto has faced the Cubs only once since 2018, and that was June 6, 2021, before the Cubs selloff.

The good news — perhaps — is that Patrick Wisdom took Cueto deep twice that afternoon. Perhaps he can do that again tonight.

The 2022 Game Thread procedure will be like last years, similar to what we’ve used for Spring Training.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
