The Cubs lose to the Orioles, 9-3

If you are following any significant quantity of Cubs baseball then I’m not either the first or the last who will use this next line, in fact, Al used it in his recap. Christopher Morel homered leading off the game and it was pretty much downhill from there. Keegan Thompson has been the brightest star, by just about any measure, on this Cubs team. On Tuesday, Keegan got hammered and the Cubs never recovered.

With the loss, the Cubs have dropped back to a season-low 10 games below .500. My brain followed this game unfolding and couldn’t help thinking that the Cubs were getting crushed by one of the worst teams in baseball. Unfortunately, the Cubs are also one of the worst teams in baseball. So it was not completely out of character. That doesn’t make it any less disappointing.

Games like this are exactly why I moved to a three positives format. It is so easy to get down on the team after a lopsided loss like this. But there is a whole team busting its collective butts out there. We’re going to continue to challenge ourselves to find three positive things to say about this one.

Alec Mills was back and he threw five innings in relief, saving the rest of the bullpen (which also had a day off on Monday and another set for Thursday. Effective out of the pen normally means a bunch of zeroes. Here, throwing in a game that was already lopsided, just providing length is the value.

Christopher Morel was the only Cub with multiple hits. He had two of them including his first-inning leadoff homer. He also tripled later.

Willson Contreras is having such an excellent year at the plate that you do not need to attach the caveat of “among catchers.” His offensive season would play at just about any position. He drew a walk and hit a solo homer.

With that, we turn our attention to the Heroes and Goats from last night’s loss.

Unfortunately, it was all downhill from there. Keegan Thompson had the worst start of his career and really didn’t do anything right. He got smacked for three home runs and also hit two batters and allowed seven runs in three innings That ballooned Thompson’s season ERA from 1.99 to 3.17 and the Cubs lost the series opener to the Orioles 9-3, their first loss to the O’s since 2008.

Honestly, there isn’t much more to say about this game. Alec Mills, just activated from the injured list, made his season debut and threw reasonably well (five innings, six strikeouts, an efficient 73 pitches), though he was also touched for a pair of home runs. In finishing up the game, he saved the rest of the bullpen for Wednesday’s game.

Funny thing, as we learned in the series preview from Mark Brown of Camden Chat, the Orioles carved out a whole bunch of seats in left field to make it harder to hit home runs there. And yet, seven balls left the yard Tuesday, go figure. The five homers Cubs pitching allowed is the second time in the last four games they’ve done that (also last Friday against the Cardinals).

The Cubs put another run on the board in the sixth. Jason Heyward walked with one out and one out later, Morel tripled him in [VIDEO].

Morel’s two-hit game extended his franchise record streak of reaching base from the start of a career to 21 games. Only 11 players in MLB history have had a longer such streak (and it’ll still be 11 even if Morel gets a hit Wednesday, because next up are two 23-game streaks). This, at least, is something fun about the Cubs to keep an eye on, and every game Morel has like this solidifies his claim to stick around in the big leagues. If he keeps this up, he’s going to get some Rookie of the Year votes.

Attendance was announced as 11,509, but it looked like maybe 5,000 were in the house at one of the nicer ballparks in baseball, Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The weather wasn’t great — it rained off and on much of the game — and that was likely a factor, but Baltimore is averaging fewer than 16,000 per game this year.

This brief recap is over, and speaking of “brief,” the Cubs will wrap this quick two-game set in Baltimore Wednesday evening. Marcus Stroman will start for the Cubs and Jordan Lyles is the scheduled starter for the Orioles. Game time is again 6:05 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network.

Tuesday notes...

SCORING EARLY: The Cubs have scored 49 first-inning runs, most in the major leagues. Those 49 runs have come in 25 of the team’s 55 games, broken down as follows: one run (12 times), two runs (seven times), three runs (five times), eight runs (once, May 16 vs. the Pirates). When leading after the first inning, though, the Cubs are just 12-11.

HEADING FOR A SHOWDOWN: The Cubs and Orioles rank first and second in games decided by two or fewer runs — the Cubs have 31 such games (tied with the Diamondbacks) and the O’s have 33. The Cubs’ record in those 31 games, unfortunately, is only 12-19. The O’s are 15-18.

WALKING ON BY: The Cubs have drawn 68 walks in 16 games since May 22, and four or more in nine of their last 11 games. On the season, they are third in MLB in walks with 197 (tied with the Mariners).

WORDS OF WISDOM: Patrick Wisdom has played in 158 games for the Cubs since his callup May 25, 2021, just about one full season’s worth of games. In that span he has hit .229/.304/.506 (120-for-524) with 25 doubles, 40 home runs, 86 runs and... 227 strikeouts. That’s a lot of K’s... but also a lot of home runs, and a good .810 OPS. All of this is worth 3.1 bWAR. That’s good enough to be a regular MLB player.

The 2022 Game Thread procedure will be like last years, similar to what we’ve used for Spring Training.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.
