The Cubs get blown out again.

Most of everything I know about the Titanic came from seeing the movie, so you’ll pardon me if my pained analogy relies heavily on the movie and assumes most of the history stuff is pretty much gospel. If the captain hadn’t have gone down with the ship, you’d have fired him, right? I mean, the annoying corporate guy for the White Star Line pressured him into going too fast, for sure. The buffoons in the watch tower didn’t have their binoculars. Yeah, I get that. The whole thing was exasperated by a poor design with a lack of lifeboats. Oh and as I recall, it was covered less well in the movie, but there were issues with the communication room too.

This is a lot of words to say that it takes a village to screw up a franchise as bad as the Cubs organization is screwed up right now. It is completely and totally unfair to blame just one guy. But seriously, the captain, or in this case the manager can’t escape the blame, right? Joe Maddon will be considered for the Hall of Fame and receive votes. He was fired for his recent lengthy losing streak. The same is probably true of Joe Girardi.

Since I’ve bent the narrative and had the captain saved, let’s continue it forward. But what if the captain had another ship and ran into the iceberg again the next year? So hear me out. Ross is your “captain” of the Cubs. You didn’t fire him for losing 11 in a row, despite a different organization deciding 12 in a row was good enough for firing this year. Wait, David hasn’t lost 11 in a row this year. Nope. He did that last June. We’ve seen this story before, just under one calendar year ago. That team was running in first place.

Will this streak run past nine? Who knows? I do know that the Cubs will be decently favored to lose at home in every game remaining this week. The Padres and Braves have two of the better teams in the league. Does that always hold up? Obviously not. The Cubs could win today. Or they could keep right on losing. It doesn’t really matter at this point for any practical purposes.

People were tired of the Maddon show by the time he left town. I get it. I’d heard similar things from former Rays players. It’s cute until it isn’t. Joe was often criticized for some of his in-game decision making. To my eye, apart from the games, he was as good as they get. He ran an excellent clubhouse. Guys knew what to expect and he kept the team loose and performing at a high level. His lineups and bullpen usage drove some of the stars a little mad, but in turn his bench players tended to love him for the way he kept them fresh and involved. More than a handful of marginal players thrived under him.

I’ve seen little evidence that David Ross is either good at the in game or the out of game stuff. I suspect none of this should be terribly surprising. David was handed the wheel of this ship with no actual experience. Have there been a few instances of guys who succeeded in exactly that way? Absolutely. Does that mean the model of actually paying your dues and learning from the grind going through coaching and then managing is flawed? No. Just because there are exceptions doesn’t mean you throw out the rules.

I’ve lived through the Cubs being bad so frequently that I have for these down seasons the lowest bar imaginable. That bar is set at “at least don’t embarrass yourselves.” The Cubs aren’t meeting that bar. This team is a flat-out joke right now. They have had a ton of injuries, sure. But this team is comically bad. I saw a Tiger quoted recently. They are going through some of the same things and have had a slew of position players pitch. The comment was to the effect that after the first couple of times, it isn’t cute anymore. Frank Schwindel should not have a meaningful number of pitching appearances.

There’s a 700+ word rant on how bad this team is right now. And yet, there were a couple of positives from last night’s game. Let’s look at those before we unwrap the carnage.

Christopher Morel had two hits, including a homer, and drove in three runs. Baseball, like so much in life, can be fluid. But as of right now, he has Wally Pipp’d the Cubs lineup. Be it in center, where he has played most, or anywhere else on the diamond, his bat needs to be in the lineup.

Eric Stout. I know life has gotten busy for me when the Cubs continue to call up players I wasn’t even aware were in the organization. With all due respect, I had no idea who this guy was. But striking out the first four batters he faced and retiring all five batters he faced? That’s an impressive Cubs debut.

Ian Happ. Three singles and a walk. That’s the second time in a week that he’s had a big game when the Cubs got crushed. I don’t read anything into the timing. Ian has had a very good season and his contributions have been significant.

So we’ve put it off enough, let’s get to the Heroes and Goats from last night’s drubbing.

Seriously.

Oh, I used to be disgusted.
And now I try to be amused

— Elvis Costello, “The Angels Want To Wear My Red Shoes”

There are a number of ways I could have approached this game recap (and trust me, I thought about almost all of them).

I thought of coming here and simply saying:

“The Cubs lost to the Padres 19-5, and the teams will play again Thursday afternoon.”

... and just ending things there.

Would you have been amused?

That’s about all we have left, isn’t it? I mean, I lived through two 100+ loss Cubs seasons in the 1960s, though I probably didn’t understand the true meaning of them back then. I lived through a 98-loss season in 1980 and what likely would have been a franchise record for losses in 1981 if not for the strike and this is what that feels like, the end of the Wrigley ownership era with guys like Joe Strain and Mike Lum on the team.

I mean, why is Daniel Norris still on this team? Why is Andrelton Simmons still wearing a Cubs uniform?

The word “pathetic” appears in the headline here and that’s exactly how I feel about the Cubs’ nine-game losing streak, during which they have been outscored 84-26, the equivalent of losing every one of those nine games by a 9-3 score. It was the third time this year the Cubs have allowed at least 18 runs in a game, which matches a franchise record set in 1975.

I’m kind of doing stream-of-consciousness here so you’ll forgive me if the rest of this seems a bit disjointed. It seems rather worthless, don’t you think, for me to recount the parade of Padres runners who crossed the plate or give a play-by-play of the annihilation against Cubs pitchers. The Padres went 11-for-19 with RISP. The Cubs have had 11 hits with RISP ... in this entire losing streak, in 94 at-bats, which is... do you really care about the exact batting average? “Awful” should suffice.

Fine, have some highlights. The Cubs actually had a lead in this game after Caleb Kilian got touched up for two runs in the first.

Thing is, two of their four runs in the second inning scored on bases-loaded walks. I mean... that’s not really worth watching, is it?

The other two scored on this single by Christopher Morel [VIDEO].

So that was good.

Kilian gave the lead back in the fourth and the game was basically over, even though the Cubs trailed by just one at the time.

This is where I again say, “Why is Daniel Norris still on this team?” because Norris faced four batters and didn’t retire any of them. (This is becoming a theme, Mychal Givens did that on Tuesday.)

Does anyone in the Cubs front office have an answer to that question? (Don’t answer that.)

Morel provided some more brief excitement when he homered in the sixth [VIDEO].

Then the Padres scored some more runs off Alec Mills, and why on Earth Mills wasn’t the first guy out of the pen in this game is beyond me. Eric Stout had the only scoreless outing by a Cubs pitcher on the night, and while I suppose that’s good, will any of you even remember that Eric Stout was a Cub five years from now? (Nothing personal to Eric, who I am sure is a nice guy, and his family will remember, since they’re from the Chicago area.)

At 16-5 in the ninth inning, we got entertained by the Frank Schwindel Pitching Show again, and I know some of you are tired of the position player pitching thing and if the Cubs had better real pitchers we wouldn’t see this, but come on, tell me this is not amusing:

A 32 mile per hour pitch. (And trust me, Gameday, that was not a “curveball.”) I would say that most every BCB reader can throw a baseball that fast. Frank Schwindel is everyman! On the mound, he is the physical embodiment of any baseball fan thinking, “I can do that!” Because yes, you almost certainly can do that!

Then Luke Voit hit a home run off Frank The Tank that went a long, long, LONG way:

That, my friends, was the longest home run hit at Wrigley Field this year. (So far, anyway.) Also, again, Gameday, that was not a “slider.”

How can you not be amused? Because if you don’t laugh about something like that... it just gets too depressing.

It is a baseball axiom that no team is as bad as it looks when they are on a long losing streak. This streak, though, is testing that statement’s limits.

The thing I really can’t figure out about the post-2021 selloff Cubs is why they are so bad at Wrigley Field. Since the 2021 selloff:

Cubs at home: 19-44
Cubs on road: 25-32

Even the horrid 1980 and 1981 Cubs, to whom I referred earlier in this recap, were at least sort of close to .500 at Wrigley:

1980-81 Cubs at home: 64-74
1980-81 Cubs on road: 38-89

It’s like opposite day, only for an entire year.

Sorry for the mess here, but this team is a mess and I do know this: Cubs ownership and management is going to have to do something about the deplorable state of their baseball team next offseason, or they risk blowing up a fanbase it has taken several decades of careful cultivation to amass.

Wait, one more thing: When the game ended, for the second straight night, Wrigley Field’s organist played “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” by Crowded House. The song’s refrain goes:

Hey now, hey now
Don’t dream it’s over
Hey now, hey now
When the world comes in
They come, they come
To build a wall between us
We know they won’t win

I mean, COME ON. That’s just adding insult to insult.

All right, now I’m done with this recap. Hope it was better than the game. Oh, one more thing: The Reds lost too, so for now, the Cubs avoid last place in the NL Central.

The Cubs will attempt to avoid a four-game sweep by the Padres Thursday afternoon. Matt Swarmer will start for the Cubs and Joe Musgrove will go for San Diego. Game time is 1:20 p.m. CT and TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network. It should be noted that the Cubs have been swept in a four-game series by the Padres only twice, in San Diego in 2006 and at Wrigley in 2010. Personally, I’d like that statement to remain true after today’s game.

Caleb Kilian had a successful MLB debut against the Cardinals June 4 at Wrigley Field. Though he was charged with three runs in five innings, he was off for just one inning, the rest were quite good and he struck out six.

He’s made one start for Iowa since then, allowing three runs in fewer than four innings, but still with six strikeouts.

I hope he’s back in MLB to stay.

Ryan Weathers made 30 appearances for the Padres last year (18 starts), but has spent all of 2022 at Triple-A, until tonight. He’s posted a 7.29 ERA and 1.840 WHIP there — yikes — but that’s for El Paso, a notable hitters’ park.

Anyway, he faced the Cubs twice last year, both times before the selloff, and as such hasn’t faced too many current Cubs. Willson Contreras and Patrick Wisdom both have hit home runs off him.

Since neither of these pitchers has thrown 100 pitches in MLB this year, I don’t have pitch selection graphics for them. Kilian did throw a number of pitches as fast as 96 in his outing against the Cardinals.

The 2022 Game Thread procedure will be like last years, similar to what we’ve used for Spring Training.

You’ll find the game preview posted separately on the front page two hours before game time (90 minutes for some early day games following night games).

At the same time, a StoryStream containing the preview will also post on the front page, titled “Cubs vs. (Team) (Day of week/date) game threads.” It will contain every post related to that particular game, including the First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread, as well as the recap when it’s published. The recap will also live on the front page as a separate post.

You will also be able to find the preview, First Pitch Thread and the overflow thread in the box marked “Chicago Cubs Game Threads” at the bottom of the front page (you can also find them in this section link). The StoryStream for each game can also be found in that section.

The First Pitch thread will post at five minutes before game time, then an overflow thread at 90 minutes after the scheduled game time.

Discuss amongst yourselves.
