The Cubs’ bats come to life in a 12-5 win

I know I have a little PTSD when I can remember lots of games that followed this script going the other way: A seemingly good-looking game turns to fool’s gold. I considered walking away from the game Tuesday night after five innings. I’ve watched more baseball in less time than I have in quite a while. With the bats struggling and Hayden Wesneski scuffling, I was not looking forward to writing about a fourth straight loss after a near-perfect opening day win.

Then something that will almost certainly not happen again this year for the Cubs occurred. The Cubs scored 11 runs in four innings. To be sure there were a couple of rough plays by the Cincinnati defense and a whole lot of subpar pitching over those four innings. But, the Cubs got production almost top to bottom in the lineup. Ironically, after hitting in all of the Cubs’ first four games, Dansby Swanson was one of just two Cubs not to get a hit in this one. Clearly the stress of trying to chase Emilio Bonifacio proved to be too much.

I’m unable to ignore that the Cubs got three rough starts after two terrific ones to start the season. I’ve listened to all of the comments about being amped up for the first start. I’m a little more able to swallow that at least for Hayden Wesneski on his first opening day roster than guys like Jameson Taillon and Drew Smyly who have been around a few different blocks in their respective careers.

But beyond that, Al controls the complaint department, but I don’t have much to complain about here. The Cubs did what they needed to and now their best pitcher, at least for now, has a chance to get them a series win. Two out of three is two out of three on the road, even when you feel like you could have maybe squeezed out a sweep. We’ll get to it later, but I remain firmly in the corner of healthy Marcus Stroman.

We turn our attention to three positives from Tuesday’s second win of the season.

An easy choice for me with Ian Happ reaching base the first five times he batted. Two singles, a double, two walks, two runs, and a run batted in. I think it’s possible Ian likes hitting in Cincinnati.

This one was a little trickier, but after taking one off of the wrist, I’m going with Patrick Wisdom here. Three hits, two of them doubles, three runs driven in and two scored. It would kill so much of the joy in baseball if I couldn’t report to you that he is on pace for 162 runs batted in. Oh and 65 homers and 65 doubles. (Did anyone point out that even after going hitless, Dansby Swanson is still on pace for 324 hits?)

When 12 runs are scored, there are going to be some tough snubs. I’m going with Cody Bellinger in the last spot. He had three hits and a walk in six plate appearances. He drove in a run and scored a run. I don’t think any of the Cubs’ first seven hitters would be a terrible choice for one of these three spots.

With that settled, let’s turn attention to the Heroes and Goats from Tuesday’s win.

Up Next: The two teams square off with the winner taking two out of three in this series. The Cubs will send Marcus Stroman (1-0, 0.00) to the mound looking to repeat his dominant first outing. The Reds counter with Hunter Greene (0-1, 8.10) who had a rougher first outing, despite striking out eight in just 3⅓ innings. Greene, the second overall pick in 2017, is talented. But I think the Cubs can make it two straight and head into a tricky-looking stretch of games at 3-3. Hopefully, the bats can carry their momentum through to the finale.

The Cubs, at last, put together a strong offense — and without a home run.

The 2023 Cubs have been noted, among other things, as being a bit power-challenged. Through their first four games they had hit just four home runs (and by just three players, as Patrick Wisdom had hit two).

Tuesday night in Cincinnati, they proved that a team can put together a strong offense without hitting a baseball out of the yard. They hit no homers, but collected 16 hits and six walks, and that resulted in a 12-run uprising that routed the Reds 12-5.

The scoring began early, on a sacrifice fly by Trey Mancini in the first inning, scoring Nico Hoerner to make it 1-0 Cubs. Nice slide by Nico, incidentally [VIDEO].

But Hayden Wesneski, who had been so good late last year and in Spring Training, gave the run right back in the bottom of the first. Then Wesneski got touched up for solo homers by TJ Friedl and Jason Vosler in the third and fourth, and it was 3-1 Reds going into the sixth. Wesneski was not able to finish the fifth inning. Honestly, I suspect this was a one-off, and sometimes having to deal with adversity will help a pitcher get better in the long run.

As for the bullpen, they did generally a nice job. Adbert Alzolay threw two-plus innings and allowed a two-run homer, but you could tell he was running out of gas at that point. Overall he threw 44 pitches (32 strikes) and struck out five. Maybe two innings is his limit, though, at least at this point of the season.

Julian Merryweather, who had a rough first outing, was given the ninth and allowed a leadoff single, but otherwise finished without incident. Here’s the final out [VIDEO].

The complaint department is definitely closed today. The Cubs went 10-for-21 (!) with RISP, taking advantage of nearly every opportunity to score runs. As I mentioned earlier, yes, this team might struggle to hit home runs at times. But they can still score in big numbers if they hit the way they did in this one.

Fun note from Ian Happ, who went 3-for-4 with two walks and two runs scored:

Lastly, a pitch clock related note from BCB’s JohnW53:

The last time the Cubs won a game by a score of 12-5 also was at Cincinnati, on August 8, 2019. That game had 30 total hits, five more than in Tuesday’s game. It had seven walks and 16 strikeouts, about the same as Tuesday’s 8 and 17. But it lasted 3 hours, 45 minutes, compared to 2:56 Tuesday.

The Cubs will go for the series win Wednesday in a game that starts early, at 11:35 a.m. CT. Opening Day starters are on tap for both teams: Marcus Stroman for the Cubs and Hunter Greene for the Reds. TV coverage will be via Marquee Sports Network, and in some areas on MLB Network (check local listings).

As this is an early start, please note: Today’s game preview will post at 10 a.m. CT.

The Cubs look to even up this three-game set.

Tuesday notes...

HE’S HOT: Dansby Swanson has reached base 11 times in 18 plate appearances so far this year (.611 OBP), with 10 hits (eight singles and two doubles) and a walk.

MORE DANSBY: Swanson is the first Cub in the Modern Era to make at least three hits in three of the team’s first four games of a season. Twenty-two others had a pair of three-hit games. The three who did it this century were Aramis Ramirez (2007), Starlin Castro (2011) and Emilio Bonifacio (2014). Ernie Banks and Billy Williams each did it in two seasons. Among others who did it once: Hack Wilson, Phil Cavarretta, Hank Sauer and Mark Grace. (Courtesy BCB’s JohnW53)

HE’S HOT: Keegan Thompson has faced 15 batters so far this year and retired 13 of them, allowing just one single and a walk for a WHIP of 0.462.

HE’S NOT: Cody Bellinger is just 1-for-15 so far as a Cub. The one hit, though, was a three-run homer Monday night, his first Cubs home run.

THE HAPPER: Ian Happ went 1-for-4 (a double) Monday night in Cincinnati. Career at GABP: .311/.410/.723 (46-for-148) with 11 doubles, a triple and 16 home runs.

Hayden Wesneski had a good spring, posting a 2.12 ERA in five starts and striking out 22 in 17 innings.

Last year he faced the Reds twice, including five outstanding relief innings in his MLB debut September 6. Overall vs. Cincinnati: 11 innings, six hits, one run (0.82 ERA), two walks, 14 strikeouts.

This could be a good day for the Cubs.

Luis Cessa hadn’t started a game since 2018 when the Reds pressed him into service for 10 starts last year. He did an okay job — 4.30 ERA, 1.227 WHIP — but he had a 5.14 ERA and allowed three home runs in 14 innings against the Cubs. Ian Happ and Eric Hosmer have previously homered against Cessa.
