<p>I have dinner plans this evening and had to leave the computer before the game was over, so write your own recap of this game.</p> <form>Saturday afternoon in Tempe, Arizona, in their first 2013 spring-training game, the <a href="https://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Cubs</a> <select name="s1-1"><option>defeated</option>
<option>lost to</option>
<option>tied</option></select> the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.halosheaven.com/">Los Angeles Angels</a> of Anaheim.<br> The Cubs scored <select name="s1-2"><option>6 runs.</option>
<option>7 runs.</option>
<option>8 runs.</option>
<option>9 runs.</option>
<option>10 runs.</option>
<option>11 runs.</option>
<option>More? You want more? Have more!</option></select><br> The Angels scored <select name="s1-3"><option>2 runs.</option>
<option>3 runs.</option>
<option>4 runs.</option>
<option>5 runs.</option>
<option>6 runs.</option>
<option>7 runs.</option>
<option>More. Probably.</option></select><br> The best Cubs hitting performance was turned in by <select name="s1-4"><option> Logan Watkins.</option>
<option> Dave Sappelt.</option>
<option> Anthony Rizzo.</option>
<option> Scott Hairston.</option>
<option> Luis Valbuena.</option>
<option> Welington Castillo.</option>
<option> Brett Jackson.</option>
<option> Brent Lillibridge.</option>
<option> Darnell McDonald.</option>
<option>Someone else. Those guys were gone by the 4th inning.</option></select><br> The best Cubs pitching performance came from <select name="s1-5"><option> Travis Wood.</option>
<option> Jaye Chapman.</option>
<option> Rafael Dolis.</option>
<option> Trey McNutt.</option>
<option> Zach Putnam.</option>
<option> Hector Rondon.</option>
<option> Hisanori Takahashi.</option>
<option> Dontrelle Willis.</option>
<option>Someone else. This is getting to be a long list!</option></select>.<br> It was sunny and the attendance was <select name="s1-6"><option> < 5,000.</option>
<option>5,001-6,000.</option>
<option>6,001-7,000.</option>
<option>7,001-8,000.</option>
<option>8,001-9,000.</option>
<option>9,000 +.</option></select><br> After the game, President of Baseball Operations Theo Epstein <select name="s1-7"><option>sat back with a satisfied look on his face.</option>
<option>made two trades for more prospects.</option>
<option>kept radio silence.</option>
<option>went out to celebrate.</option></select><br> Meanwhile, General Manager Jed Hoyer <select name="s1-8"><option>traded himself back to the Padres.</option>
<option>flew back to Chicago.</option>
<option>hired three more scouts.</option>
<option>went out to celebrate with Theo.</option>
<option>all of the above</option></select><br> The Cubs hit <select name="s1-9"><option>1 home run Saturday.</option>
<option>2 home runs Saturday.</option>
<option>3 home runs Saturday.</option>
<option>4 home runs Saturday.</option>
<option>5 home runs Saturday.</option>
<option>Seriously? 5 HR? You put that as a choice?</option></select><br> In the ninth inning, the Cubs got two men on base and <select name="s1-10"><option>scored eight runs! Fun!</option>
<option>actually got one of them as far as third base!</option>
<option>got one of them caught in a rundown between third and home.</option>
<option>... both of the last two options</option>
<option>They didn't do any of this. I made this up during the first inning.</option></select><br> Luis Valbuena hit a home run for the Cubs. This is important because <select name="s1-11"><option>it proved that a Cubs hitter can actually homer.</option>
<option>Valbuena could wind up the starting 3B.</option>
<option>it made me look bad for criticizing Valbuena.</option>
<option>No, wait. No, it doesn't. On second thought, it doesn't mean a thing</option></select><br>Brett Jackson hit two triples for the Cubs. This is important because <select name="s1-12"><option>it means he'll hit 30 triples this year.</option>
<option>those will be his only triples of 2013.</option>
<option>seriously, Jackson's new approach looks great.</option></select><br> Meanwhile, the <a href="https://www.draysbay.com/" class="sbn-auto-link">Tampa Bay Rays</a> lost to the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.bucsdugout.com/">Pittsburgh Pirates</a>. <select name="s1-13"><option>Who cares? This is a Cubs recap.</option>
<option>Here's why you might care:</option>
<option>Former Cub Felix Pie had a triple...</option>
<option>... for the Pirates.</option>
<option>And now, back to Cubs content.</option></select><br> Sunday at Mesa, the Cubs will <select name="s1-14"><option>win.</option>
<option>lose.</option>
<option>tie.</option>
<option>get rained out.</option></select><br> In that game, the Cubs will send <span>Jeff Samardzija</span> to the mound, and he will... <select name="s1-15"><option>... win the game against the Giants </option>
<option>... by throwing a shutout.</option>
<option>No, he won't. He'll put in his two innings and head home.</option></select><br> Manager Dale Sveum's comments after today's game included: <select name="s1-16"><option>"Look, what do you want me to do?"</option>
<option>(Whoops, sorry. That one's left over from two managers ago.)</option>
<option>"Hey, Woodsy pitched pretty well."</option>
<option>(Whoops, sorry. That one's left over from the last manager.)</option>

<p>At last, Cubs baseball is back.</p> <blockquote>
<pre><i>Baseball time is here again
You can catch it all on WGN -- Steve Goodman</i></pre>
</blockquote>
<p>At long last, baseball has returned! This afternoon's first Cubs spring-training game can indeed be heard on WGN radio (with Len Kasper subbing for Pat Hughes on PBP). It's my understanding that if you have the new 2013 MLB At Bat app for whatever mobile device you own, you can listen to spring-training games free of charge.</p>
<p>So fire up your radios, computers, smartphones and listen to the Cubs take on the <a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.halosheaven.com/">Angels</a> from Tempe Diablo Stadium at 2:05 p.m. Central.</p>
<p>Here's a note that is definitely not good news:</p>
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet">
<p>Stewart and Vitters MRI confirm mild to moderate quad strains. Both out 10-14 days. Not good news for Stewart.</p>— Paul Sullivan (@PWSullivan) <a href="https://twitter.com/PWSullivan/status/305334104734445569">February 23, 2013</a>
</blockquote>
<script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script><p>Sigh. Guess it's <span>Luis Valbuena</span> again at third base. Unless the Cubs want to think outside the box and try <span>Logan Watkins</span> there. Or maybe <span>Junior Lake</span> surprises everyone.</p>
<p>Here's the Cubs lineup for this afternoon:</p>
<blockquote>
<pre>Watkins 2B, Sappelt CF, Rizzo 1B, Hairston RF, Valbuena 3B, Castillo C, Jackson LF, Lillibridge SS, McDonald DH</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>Looks like almost all the regulars are getting the first day of spring off. For the Angels:</p>
<blockquote>
<pre>Bourjos CF, Aybar SS, Trumbo 1B, Conger C, Hall 3B, Cousins RF, Oeltjen LF, Rodriguez 2B, Carlin DH</pre>
</blockquote>
<p>For spring-training games, we'll have a first-pitch thread at game time and one overflow thread, 90 minutes after game time (because I know how you all like overflow threads!). These threads will <i>not</i> post individually onto the front page; instead, you can find links to them in the box marked "<a class="sbn-auto-link" href="https://www.bleedcubbieblue.com/">Chicago Cubs</a> Game Threads" at the <i>bottom</i> of the front page. I'm also trying to figure out a way to get the overflow threads into this game stream, though that might not happen until after the game. The pitcher box and regular-season stats will return on Opening Day.</p>
<p>As previously announced, <span>Travis Wood</span> will get the spring opener start. This doesn't mean anything in terms of the regular-season rotation or whether he'll make it. Other Cubs slated to pitch today: <span>Jaye Chapman</span>, <span>Rafael Dolis</span>, <span>Trey McNutt</span>, <span>Zach Putnam</span>, <span>Hector Rondon</span> and <span>Hisanori Takahashi</span>. For the Angels, former Cub <span>Jerome Williams</span> gets the start.</p>
<p>Discuss amongst yourselves.</p>
